2018 4Runner

"the panel gaps between doors and hood etc was not perfect for all the JGCs we looked this summer. 4runner had perfect spaces all over."
This says it all..That's true for every aspect of the 4Runner ..They are solid and stay solid..We bought a 2017 Limited Sat. To replace the 04 SR5 my wife drives..Only bought the new one because the 04 has 194,000 miles..Never one problem..Still has same brakes..I believe whoever gets this SUV will put another 100,000 miles on it easy..Comparing Jeep to Toyota is the equivalent of comparing Dodge Ram to Ford F150..:laugh:

Ok I'm done talking about anything other than a 4 Runner here, don't want to offend anyone and force them to read something. I just fulfilled my promise to report back about my switch. Believe me I would have crucified the Jeep if it deserved it. If things get ugly with it I will report that though because I'm sure that will go over big.
I always marvel at the fact that we do not get the editions that everyone else gets. I know this is typical and why they don't do that....but I still don't like it. I love that 70-Series Land Cruiser Wagon!!! On another note, a buddy of mine has the last run Defender over in England and it's amazing!! Another model we don't get. Again, I understand why....I just love those models.

Wow!! Pretty strict up in this joint! I felt my comment had nexus to the thread title in the since of explaining 4runner/Japanese longevity. Pretty much agreeing if it ain't broke, don't fix. Pretty much caring less of 2018 total makeover. Sorry for offending or getting externally off subject. I also hear millennials are eating these 4Runners up, must be legit!!
To be honest, I drove an Acura TL with Advanced Crap at one point of my life.. The thing that scares me the most is relying on it like how we all rely on our iPhone/android devices on a day and when its gone we like all die or that's what all the millennial do..
I transitioned from an S2000 which is basically manual everything except the push to start function but yet still have to put that damn key in it.. As much as I'm aware.. I did my research before purchasing a 4Runner and seeing how it is a step higher from my S2K it was an easy transition.. All you really need is Navi and a backup camera the key essentials.. Not really I lied + Cruise Control lol..
Overall if ya'll are complaining about all the added assistance driving features we do not have then you might as well get a Honda Pilot or a Honda in general since they offer it to the masses at entry level sedans..

just to add to the rant...
ive already got all that stuff, they are called EYES and a NECK. Learn to actually drive and you'll be shocked how much of that stuff you don't need.
I admint that i am in the minority. Years ago, after taking both a motorcycle race school and an advanced driving class, i realized the actual art/skill of driving is so much more than many people ever care to put into it. Sure, all of those electronic thingys help, but if you actually take driving seriously, and understand that you have to give it your full, or at least 75% of your attention to do it well. And most people do not, or will not, do that...they'd rather have a few beeps, and a vibrating seat or steering wheel do it for them...along with their texting and telephoning.
um, until those toys break and the dealer is needed to fix and bill you for it.
Ill take my 'simple' T4R, and will keep looking over my shoulders before changing lanes. hey, call me old skool i guess.

As others have said -- if you want something with the latest features, you have PLENTY of options.
But for us who want something simple -- to take on trails, and to have a mid-sized body on frame SUV, that will be reliable, we have precious FEW. In fact, almost all of the 4Runner's competitors have gone the way that the OP has suggested. Pathfinder is a CUV, same with Explorer.
Why have 4Runner sales exploded? In part because everyone else has abandoned this market. Except for Toyota. It is the closest we have to a budget Landcruiser in the States.
Are there some things that Toyota ought to do to "modernize" it? Yes. A tranny with an extra gear and more aggressive gear ratio would be nice. More comfy seats. An available diesel option or V8 would be nice too.
But those are updates that keep the spirit of the 4Runner intact. I think one of Toyota's best moves was to introduce the Highlander. Those who don't need a BOF SUV can go that route, and it kept the 4Runner from servicing two very different markets and could remain "pure" to its goal.

So - despite the simplicity the Japanese are notorious for their high quality OCD nature. It is part of their culture. Anyone who has been there has experienced this.
I'd rather pay a few $ more for this way of thinking than a " Made in Mexico/China/India etc " vehicle

Wanting to purchase a trd in December
Hay y’all, I’m looking into getting a trd this December. My first vehicle was a 4Runner and I absolutely loved it. With that being said I don’t want to spend over 30k on a 2018 TRD . Is this a insane number? I’m willing to wait until the last 2 weeks of December when the dealer really needs to make sales. I would love to get some feedback and some tips on how to get the vehicle I want at the price I need.

Not sure you can buy the most basic trim level 4R for close to that price. And these things sell great all year long. End of year sales will not drop the price like that on 4R. Good luck.
If you can buy a new 4WD-4R for that price, jump on it. 30K 2WD ?
Add in the sales tax, T&T, admin fee, transportation, etc. If you trade, you will pay tax on the difference. There is a $1K rebate on new 4R's in some regions.
