I was hoping at least for the Tundra's 8AT or interior... no such luck.

Toyota gives no F's about BOF anymore.

I just think it is interesting that they even bothered to refresh this fossil at all. It makes me more optimistic that the 4R (or some follow-on) has a future.

You're right - my bad. All three share the same basic powertrain... I don't know why Toyota can't at least drop a new tranny in the Sequoia and Tundra.

Now that they have unveiled the Tundra and Sequoia, maybe they can show off a new 4Runner at the autoshow in Dallas next month. Please, please, please!
 
I'm a Toyota fan. I really am.....Really.

But COME ON!!!! The Tundra and the Sequoia have become jokes. Seriously put some 'effin cash and resources into these vehicles!

These grill and gauge updates are getting tiring.
 
It's really quite sad how little effort they put into refreshing this. Basically swapped out the grill and headlights...didn't even touch the back. It's amazing how they expect to sell any of these.
 
I was also surprised at how little got changed. I'm still a bit on the fence between a 4Runner and Tundra so I was watching this unveiling to see if it'd be worth holding off till the fall to buy but they haven't done anything to the Tundra that would make me want the 2018 over a 2017. If the 4Runner gets a similar "update" for 2018/19 I couldn't see waiting either. The adaptive cruise control and related safety gear is neat but not something I particularly need/want.


I'm a bit on both sides of the fence here since though I'd like to see certain aspects of both trucks modernized, part of the appeal of both the 4R and Tundra is how old school they are.

Don't get me wrong, the Tundra is a great truck. I've owned a few of them and the gas mileage difference between the 4Runner and the Tundra isn't much. For me it was the size of the Tundra that finally swayed me away. I owned a 2009, 2011 and 2014. I liked the 2014 the most. I moved from a 2wd in the 09 and the other two were moved through because of lifestyle and business reasons but were 4wd.

I don't have complaints on my 4Runner at all. Better gas mileage is about it. It would be nice to look at 21mpg. It's not far off from that and I think that is what frustrates so many here. With minimal effort, the 4Runner could be even better. An unrealistic want would be a 6spd manual. If the new gen 4Runner came in a manual, I'd most likely be at the dealer, check in hand.

The size thing wouldn't really be an issue for me. I live/work in a rural area so most parking lots and such are truck friendly (though when I had my Silverado I had to take it into Boston for a business appointment and had to make three point turns at every corner of a parking garage. That got some people a bit angry haha). I have no real need for a pickup, but they're what I've mostly owned throughout my life because I like them, nothing more really. Right now I have a 2 door Wrangler that I bought when I was living in Michigan and didn't have a commute, nor much free time to actually get out and do things. Now that I'm office based and commuting every day, the Wrangler's shortcomings as a DD are getting annoying- I have to leave the seat out if I want to fit anything bigger than a backpack in it and at the same time I'm needing to be able to accommodate passengers more and more. A Crewmax Tundra is probably going to be a bit beyond what I want to spend so it'll really be up to how suitable I find the double cab for passengers. I've spent a lot of time in the 4R now- I've had them three times as rentals (the first one being last March, which had led me to lurking on here ever since) and since they were on work trips, it was a good way to test how the truck fits my life and overall I've been pleased with it, I'd expect the same or a tiny bit better mileage than I get from the Wrangler and it'd be considerably better put together (at 28k miles the local dealer has tired twice to locate a coolant leak on the Jeep, I'm wanting out of it before 36k so I'm not paying for their lousy work). But at the same time I miss having a truck and hearing that V8 scream when I get on it. I'll probably end up flipping a coin. haha

That's what they did with the 4Rrunner in 2014 and those sell just fine. I guess they figure if it worked for the 4Runner, then why not the Sequoia.
 
This truck is still to darn big. I liked the size of the previous gen. With that said, Toyota needs to make the T4R their cash cow!!!!
 
If everything works great, "as is" , don't mess with it.

I'm not looking forward to a new 4Runner either; the 2013 is is just fine. In fact there is a lot of bling on it that I don't even use.
 
Does Toyota make anything new anymore?

Normally I look forward to a refresh but this one is disappointing since we know Toyota is going to get a few model years of mileage out of a facelift, so no new Sequoia for something like a dozen years or something ridiculous like that.

I will likely be buying something full size in the next few years. I love Toyota but it's hard to justify spending big money on a decade old product.

Welcome to the new Toyota. They are just riding out on their reputation now. Toyota knew that if they whipped every other maker in reliability it would reap major rewards in the future. Toyota does not need to spend all kinds of money refreshing their vehicles because they practically sell themselves due to that badge on the grill. When other manufacturers start kicking butt (the new ZR2 for example) and people start buying other brands, Toyota will then be forced to truly update their line.

This will take a lot of time to happen. I mentioned the ZR2 and even though it is a far superior truck to the Tacoma TRD PRO, the Tacoma will still sell cuz people love that badge on the grill.
