For those saying it's too slow get a pedal commander. If that's not good enough you bought the wrong vehicle flat out. If you planned on towing heavy you should have got a V8. If you like racing people in traffic you should have got a ranger raptor or a sports car. 1st gen's are dog shite slow, yet they crush trails. That's what 4runner do. Crush trails and get you home in comfort.
Remember what this vehicle what designed to do. Remember the vehicles heritage. Then and ask yourself if your opinion really makes any sense in that context. Because it really doesn't.

Clean Yammy!....looks like the Salton Sea area in Cali.I went from a 68 F100 with the stock 240c/I, granny-low 4-speed to the 4runner.
Power is just fine.
If I was speed I have my old musclebike.

I use to own a 4.0L 97 Grand Cherokee.
While the Toyota 4.0L makes higher peak numbers, they're over 4krpm. I'm almost positive that while the Jeep 4.0L makes less peak torque, that peak is at a lower rpm than the Toy.
My Jeep felt downright QUICK up until about 40mph, after that it was sluggish.
IMO the Toy just feels extremely weak in the 2k RPM range, where most of the normal driving is done.
My 2.5L 5cyl turbo in my '07 Volvo wagon beater makes it's torque peak of 236 ft/lbs at just under 2k rpm, exactly where it's needed. That car feels like a rocket in comparison the the 4R. I fawking LOVE the torque curve of that motor, it's like a diesel.

I rented a '18 Suburban with that motor last year in Utah. Not only was the thing a dream on the highway, it had plenty of get up and go through the mountains, AND got 20+ mpg the whole time. It had a ridiculous range, too. We drove from SLC to Moab, then around the Moab area for nearly a week before needing fuel.
I agree it was quiet and didn't sound like a V8, but then again it didn't sound like it was about to shoot a valve spring through the hood either. (I'm talkin' to you, 4.0l!)

Yeah my old Dodge caravan was probably a little faster than my 4R. Though it also went through three transmissions.
