2019 4Runner not that slow

It's an off-road oriented SUV so its acceleration is more than adequate. I wouldn't call it slow...that's what the prius & yaris are. The 4runner keeps up with normal traffic just fine.

We also have a BMW X3 with the Turbo I6 that'll do 13 sec 1/4 miles but it's just no fun pushing something this heavy to those kind of speeds.

I prefer driving the 4runner to the X3.

Keep in mind too that this is the smaller of the two V8's offered in the Tahoe, and it is still quite a bit faster than the only powertrain offered in the 4runner. I mean, 383lb ft is sluggish compared to your 4runner?:crazy:

It's ok that you like it, for me it's a horrid car. People complain about the 4R being sluggish, I suggest they sit in a Tahoe for a while to experience what a modern Chevy V8 sounds and feels like; I particularly like it between 50-75kmh where it really is loud, but nothing happens for a while when you step on the pedal. It seems to have way more power above 100kmh, though.

The 4Runner is not slow, just sluggish. Not very underpowered, but tuned heavily for fuel economy

Besides the fact that it’s a proper truck, it still has a naturally aspirated v6 with 5 tall gears and an accelerator pedal tuned for max fuel economy pushing all that weight forward.

I personally blame the super tall gear ratios and factory eco tune for the sluggishness but both can be remedied with some mods

4runner is one of the most reliable bricks on the road. Excellent off the road and adequate for moving people safely on the highway with all the basics. When I wanted fast, I have this for my fun ride. Donuts and 4 wheel slides dry or wet pavement and the 4runner has the snow donuts and slides covered (PS 0-60 in 4 seconds is slow)

I had seen quite a few people comment that the 4R is not that fast and lacks power to some degree. But to be honest i am impressed, its its 0-60 times is not shabby being under 8 seconds which is faster than my 2.5L Mazda 3 and not much slower than my Acura TL.
I also really enjoy the high rev tone of the exhaust or intake, its unique and puts a smile on my face evry time. lol

It no V8 sure, but i am still very happy/impressed with the power and i haven't even been able to drive it in 4L yet. But maybe that's where it falls off?

Not sure what mods you've done, but the moment you upgrade wheels/tires you'll really feel how underpowered it is. Nothing like having to downshift to go over an overpass at 70mph. And my mods aren't all that heavy compared to some of the other members here. Supercharger was a lifesaver. Waaaay better than it was stock.

it's definitely slow. my 98 manual was much faster accelerating. I don't mind though. For me, my 2019 TRD ORP w/ KDSS is a modern comfort vehicle (by this i mean compared to my other cars, which have all been at least 17 years old). I didn't buy it to drive fast. I bought to be comfortable, reliable, predictable, safe, functional. I bought to have a sunroof and a good stereo and be able to carry my big ol dog and some gear and go offroad, but still drive predictably and reliably and comfortably on the highway. It does that.

I'll probably add a motorcycle or performance car next year for the days I want to be a lunatic.

I'll agree with reliable and functional. However all notions of safe and predictable go out then window if you need to react to a potentially dangerous situation. Hard braking is terrifying with these things. The 2010 trail i had without KDSS horrified me once when i had to swerve to avoid getting hit by someone who ran a light. waaaay too much body roll in these things. My current one has KDSS, and that plus the duratracs firmed things up nicely. Hard braking is still something to avoid though. But i guess that applies to all cars in terms of daily driving.

If Toyota made a truck exactly like the new defender or bronco. Everyone would cry and complain. But because it’s made by another company they are praised.

Agreed. I don't think I've ever seen a group of people gripe so much about the vehicles they claim to love and have spent so much money on. The 4Runner has never been the fastest thing, but by all measurements during its 35-year run, it HAS had the best overall quality. The best. Mine have been extremely durable. So, you've purchased and are driving arguably the best-built SUV there is, and it's not fast enough for you (along with 50 other complaints)? Some folks need to sort out their values a bit before buying. Then, if speed is at the top of your must-have list, go make your purchase on that basis. Then you can gripe about lack of quality ;-)

I dunno, I have had 10+ 4.0L YJ's, XJ's and TJ's and I don't know the actual numbers but the Jeep 4.0 certainly feels like it has more torque low down in the powerband.

I am fine with the 4 runner power though. Hell, it's only in very rare instances that mine even sees full throttle. I have 1000 mile weeks in it all the time and no complaints here. The fact I can jump in it and take it on a 10 hour trip to Maine without a second thought is worth its weight in gold.

0-60 is fine for a truck. City driving no problems in daily driver. I do lack some confidence if I'm trying to pass someone.

What really annoys me is 60-90 mph and acceleration at that point. Passing on the hwy is not even a viable option unless u have a long long stretch ahead of you. Its sluggish and that's where you feel its weakness.

I have no idea what that emoji means in that context. and I definitely didn't say it was a gold standard across all cars for handling performance. I'm talking about *for me*. My previous experience is many years of very old trucks, lifted 4x4 vans, etc etc. When I need real performance handling, I ride a motorcycle.

as far as almost rolling my 4runner, I was driving on the interstate and someone cut me off and braked really hard. I had to slam on the brakes going 70 or so. truck dove hard to the front and to one side, and I thought I was going over. Similar situation on I-70 through the mountains. I was going maybe a bit fast, someone cut me off in the middle of a curve, had to slam on the brakes, truck dove to the outside of the curve.

but just driving that thing on twisty roads was scary enough. Terrific offroader, awful highway vehicle.

I came from a 2010 F-150 Supercrew 4x4 with the 5.4L V8. The power to weight ratios between that and my 4Runner are pretty spot on, so I thought the 4Runner power was pretty good. I do miss the V8 when I'm going over the passes tho. And it sounded better too.

I think it’s more seat of the pants. If you look at the torque curve the Toyota motor makes more power. It might come down to the Cherokee is a lighter vehicle.

Ive said many a time that its a 4Runner, not a Ferrari. For me its the perfect all-rounder, especially when it comes to hauling surfboards and fishing gear. The supercharger was the icing on the cake. Now if only this thing had a better transmission.

I went from a 68 F100 with the stock 240c/I, granny-low 4-speed to the 4runner.
Power is just fine.
If I was speed I have my old musclebike.
