Well, a truck is not a bad thing because i like to take my family on bike trails...and having a empty bed to put the bikes in vs. hitch bike rack (on my minivan).

NEED: safety techs. Definitely. I will not buy another car without blind-spot...and i drive at night often enough that Pre-Collision and Adaptive cruise are a must have.

Those features won’t be on 4runner until next redesign...whenever that is. Again, i would have to deal with bike racks on hitch.

Well, if i get Tacoma, then no 4runner in the foreseeable future.

Hauling bikes in the back of a truck is a PITA, I'd rather use a rack.
As for the electronic gizmos, I just watch where I'm driving.

The Tacoma needs the 4RUNNER’s seats.

I had an older Tacoma with the 4.0 and loved it. Only downside I could see is the interior gets small quickly. Buddy at work has a 18 Taco and he's very happy with it overall but his complaints are it hunts for gears and poor mpgs.

You say family but how big is your family? The Taco is a small truck especially for extended trips. I'd suggest you spend a few days in one before deciding. Most dealers offer rentals at decent rates. My wife was coming out of an Audi Q7 and I rented her a limited 4runner for a week to be sure she was good with it. She ended up with a TRD Pro 4runner and she loves it.

For me a 4runner with a small trailer is a much better option then living with a small truck. Oh and as far as your GM comments I had 2 GMC Sierras and both was 100% trouble free and great trucks. One was a 14 with the 5.3L and a 17 with the 6.2.

My parents have a '19 TRD OR tacoma. Crew cab long bed. Seems like a nice truck to drive. Totally stock. I have no issues with the power-train or shifting. Not sure how it compares to the earlier 3rd gen tacomas software wise. It's very similar feeling to a 4Runner in almost all respects. The biggest downside to me was the seating and interior are in some was a step down from a 4Runner. No height adjustment on the seats. And the rear is a lot tighter than a 4runner. I'm pretty tall, so it's not ideal. If I were 6' or under it would be no problem. My parents are both shorter than me by a bit so it's no big deal.

Anecdote: My parents have their second '19 Tacoma now. The first '19 was totaled with about 800 miles on it. Fell asleep coming down from the ski hill. Went off the road. Hasn't had a car accident ever that I remember. Of course he had all the safety stuff turned off. Didn't think he needed it.... All the safety stuff did it's job in terms of the vehicle didn't roll over and he was unharmed. Another driver said he "flipped it" - which, unless it landed perfectly back on it's tires makes no sense at all. Pretty sure it just went through a really hard impact in the ditch to set off the airbags and then through a fence that caused some body damage. The strange part is that all the head and side airbags went off, but none of the dash ones. That did cross my mind as being maybe possible to barrel roll and land perfectly without body damage??? Seems impossible though.

Here's what it looked like totaled. It really doesn't take much to "total" a car these days. Once the airbags go off it's pretty much a foregone conclusion. He had a new car replacement policy so they just had him order a new one. He got the exact same thing again.

I'm really glad he was in the Tacoma. He also has a 63 FJ40 totally stock that he drives sometimes. I think that potentially could have been much worse with no safety equipment.

Wow, if you hadn't mentioned the airbags I wouldn't have known that Tacoma was doing anything besides the driver doing donuts in the middle of an open, flat field. That's crazy.

Sorry, no Ford. My brother’s 2018 Raptor is a nightmare! Over past few months, he has not gone thru one full tank of gas without visiting dealer! Electronic AND mechanical issues!

No Chevy either...my other brother’s Chevy Cruze has been a lemon since day one.

Chevy Cruze is a lot different than their trucks, that's a pretty unfair comparison.

I'm a Toyota guy, but GMC/Chevrolet makes pretty good quality trucks. My dad purchased the Canyon All Terrain edition about a year ago, and that thing is nicer than any Tacoma I've ever been in.

Hey all,

Been thinking of this truck lately. I would love to get 4runner TRD PRO but it has no safety stuff (Adaptive Cruise, Pre-Collision, Blindspot, etc.). I understand that some of you are not into this...but I NEED it.

I'm personally waiting for TSS-P to make it to the 4runner before I buy one. I totally get where you are coming from, I got to play with the Subaru Eyesight system, and I always swore my next vehicle would have that...

I'm hoping since the Taco got it this year, maybe the 4runner will get it MY 2020. But you never know, I might be holding out for a 6th gen... in like 2024ish...

However - You should know though that every manufacturers collision avoidance systems wont inherently save you from a crash... Especially in heavier vehicles. The radar and vision systems can only do so much - especially if they see stationary objects. Often the sensors will ignore stationary objects at high speed as they assume the driver sees it and will stop if needed. They tend to error on relying on driver input as opposed to slam on the brakes and risk causing a rear end collision.

It is rumored to be what caused that Tesla to autopilot that guy in California into a wall at full speed...

The tech is awesome, but if you are looking for full autonomous, you are still like at least a decade off. Right now, it is just a neat convenience.

I know this is considered heresy, but the Colorado/Canyon twins are much better mid-sized trucks compared to the Taco. A 308 HP 3.6L V6 engine with an 8 speed auto that shifts seamlessly, and rear disc brakes. City driving is around 17 mpg, IDK about highway mpg offhand. Unfortunately they don't have the electronic safety features you want (well maybe the 2019 does).

The 2019 Colorado has an optional 2.8L Duramax turbodiesel that smashes out 20c/30h mpg. Only 181 horsepower, but a stupid 369 lb/ft of torque on a 6 speed... If I was going to get a Colorado, thats the engine I would get... Supposedly can tow 7,700lbs, but I would be a bit sketched out with a truck that weighs under 6,000, even if it has a jake-brake.

Chevy does make some pretty good trucks at the end of the day. Their entry level cars are complete garbage though...

The problem with Tacomas is the average approach angle...resulting in such mishap:

I would buy 4runner in a heartbeat if it has more safety stuff and better crash scores. Yeah, i may be paranoid but i am also father of 3 kids. Toyota needs to update the 4runner to at least on par with their other offerings.

Tacoma is not without issue either don’t get me wrong. $50k truck that has manual seats and no height adjustment. $50k truck that has drums. Those i can tolerate because it does not affect my family’s safety.

I had a 2005 Tacoma, and i sold it with 181k. Great truck, a few recalls, but powertrain was solid. Interior a little cheap.
