2020 4Runner at Chicago autoshow

I think I'm a pretty typical, non-modder type 4runner person. I sold our 4runner 18 months ago and have been waiting for some model updates before getting another. At the time, I couldn't convince myself to buy another current model year Limited that looked just like the one I just sold that was 7 years old. I need the 3rd row so that means I need the Limited (and I like the leather and other features of the limited).

It's been frustrating to see the other trims (TRD PRO, etc) get cool front ends and the Limited to be left with a slightly boring look (aka the Land Cruiser). Even the wheels are the same this many years later. Then the guess of the 6th gen release just keeps pushing out 'another year'.

I've browsed the forum enough that maybe I become a modder out of necessity to try to address things I don't like. I see some people trying to put a TRD Pro grill on a Limited. I see some people wrapping parts of the chrome to tone the chrome down. I like the different tires and spacers, even on the OEM wheels, that give the Limited a wider stance. I have very limited mechanical skills so...

That new Sequoia TRD Pro front end is ugly, IMO. Hopefully that never comes to the 4runner. It looks like the thing is bloated and the headlights, etc, are too small for it.

(Last, why did I sell the 4runner? I'll just say, if you have a wife with a sensitive nose, hopefully nobody ever pees in your car. No amount of cleaning will fix it.)

You could look at the Nightshade versions they sell from the factory now. Add a little spice to the monotony:

You also have to ask yourself: How much value does an 8" screen have over my new smartphone mounted in an accessible and viewable position? The user experience of Carplay or Android Auto may be a little bit better but I cant imagine it would justify a four figure cost.

I spent 650 for my kenwood toyota unit. I’d justify anything below 1000 depending on which car I’m putting it in but definitely not north of 1000

I know this is shocking, but since you brought it up... even a new 4runner is a bad investment (like nearly 100% of new vehicles). And equally shocking is that people are capable of considering and compromising on characteristics beyond reliability and resale value.

4Runner's sale number has been rising steadily so I guess Toyota has no incentive to make a major overhaul of this truck.

Updated safety tech + undated infotainment tech + a 6AT would easily carry the 4R into 2022, IMO.

They seem to be going for more of a Wrangler/G-Wagen philosophy of not changing a formula that isn't broken. Those little updates above would be thoughtful improvements with real day-to-day positive impacts. Not sure what else you could ask for.

SR5 has the option for a third row too. I have it in mine.

I said this on another thread a while back, but, due to the economic issues stemming from the 2008 crisis, the slow sales of not only the 4runner, but many other new cars, it seems the 5th gen 4runner really did not come out until 2014-15 or so. Just my perspective of it. Even today, to see a pre-refresh 4runner is pretty rare, at least here in the S. FL area.

I do not think this means anything, but think I just saying about my perception of the current generation feeling "old", it still feels sort of newly released to me.

next GEN features/updates/fixes i'd like:

1. power folding side mirrors on the LTD
2. heated steering wheel on the LTD
3. exterior paint that has a *coat* on it across all grades
4. power rear tailgate standard
5. passenger seat sits too high on the LTD ... people 6' or above hit the ceiling too easily ... the power seat motors must be mounted somewhere else
6. carplay w/wireless charger and blueteeth connectivity
7. TSS 2.0 features with the ability to default these features on/off based on user preference
8. birds eye features when backing up
9. power 10-12 way seats
10. heated rear seats
11. user controlled power rear vents
12. more USB 2.5amp ports in the front and rear
13. standard LED exterior lighting across the grades
14. whatever next gen powertrain is selected, please continue the *bullet-proof* rock-solid dependability/reliability/etc
15. please don't make it any longer/wider/taller/etc

There was No 2020 on KC show. I started to doubt that it even exists and suspect that they had 2019 model with new 2020 paint job in Chicago.
