3. Coming from driving BMWs for years and their LED headlight tech, the headlights in this vehicle are almost dangerously bad. I'm having the Morimoto XB LED full headlight assembly replacements done in a few weeks.

I don’t know why so much people complain about the headlights... was there no research before buying a 4Runner? It is crystal clear the headlights are not up to date but “almost dangerously”?

My ones work just fine, sure it could be better but since I don’t try to pick mushrooms on or off the road at night I’m fine.
There was a time not too long ago where there was no led or xenon and I survived it like many others.

Cannot find a usb hub that will run 2 devices, android phone Pixel2 and iPod Classic even though owners manual states you can run 2 devices with a hub.
I have tried 2 different usb hubs and can only run one device at a time. I think it may be Google's issue with Android Auto.

i had a trip with a lot of night rural highway driving during deer season before upgrading headlights, there was just enough oncoming traffic that I couldn't leave high beams running and it was terrifying. despite speed limit being 55 (and most people travelling probably 10 over that), I didn't have enough forward visibility to feel comfortable going any faster than 45-50 unless my high beams were on.

never had that feeling in other vehicles, even other halogen lighted vehicles.

I have tape marks inside my garage door for alignment checks at 10'. I noticed the right headlight is about 2' to the left and 6" low of where it should be on the mark. Going to have dealer check mine.

I don't think there is a horizontal alignment mechanism the way there is for vertical adjustment. You can adjust vertical alignment with a #2 philips pretty easily but horizontal...that's an interesting issue.

I don't think there is a horizontal alignment mechanism the way there is for vertical adjustment. You can adjust vertical alignment with a #2 philips pretty easily but horizontal...that's an interesting issue.

In the US, the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Specification (FMVSS) 108 regulation prohibits horizontal adjustment of a headlight. That is required to be set at the factory. If it is off, ten there was likely an impact.

BTW, setting a mark on your garage door at 10 feet is completely useless.

Here is the correct way of adjusting headlights manually. Again, this is in PDF format for easy printing.

It is quite possible that Bluebullet's headlight aim is fine when checked properly.

Thats what I was thinking. Im on my second runner and there is no side to side adjustment and mine were spot on.
Another thing to consider when aiming is using a laser level to check for true aim. Most paved surfaces are pitched to drain. example is a flat appearing area could still be off at 25'. Mine was off over an inch in elevation as checked with laser level. Actually both mine were spot on from the factory before I leveled

New 2020 about 8 days old. brakes started squeaking yesterday at about 175 miles. Only do it for a bit after sitting. Goes away quickly. But it is the only issue so far. I love the 4RNR and glad I traded my Taco for it. So much better of a motor and trans in the runner. I also am a lot more comfortable in it. My legs would fall asleep in the Taco no matter how I adjusted the seats. And it was a 2020 with 10 way power seats. I just find the 4Runner a more enjoyable driving experience. Now on to the mods. Still researching.

One week and 200 miles into my first 4Runner (2020 ORP), all functions appear to be nominal. Comfortable and authoritative,once I get my long legs under the fully-raised steering wheel.

Programming Homelink tested my patience. Mightily. But I passed.

Trying to get the local dealer’s in-house body shop to swap out my silver valances for black ones... we’ll see what level of adventure that turns into.

Oh crap. Revealing such plans here is going to paint a bullseye on my back. Earnest souls will feel burdened to correct the Error of My Ways, as I should clearly be DIYing it. Admonitions, judgments, and mentions of “crazy simple” may very well be unleashed. Look out!

My 2008 Frontier’s headlights were much worse. I’ll upgrade those Princes of Darkness in due course, but my hair isn’t on fire about them as it is with some folks.

0issues... and no complaints with the sound system entertainment or “squeaky breaks” ..

i think the point of this thread is to point out real issues, maybe drivetrain or suspension components. But being a new toyota owner over here, i kno they have had the same model for years now with little redesign.

other then that, i’ll post if i have a real problem

You are doing It right. Park closely to the wall and mark tape at level of little headlight dimples. Move 25 feet away and headlight hotspot should be at the same spot. If it is not, you will need to adjust it. 10 min later headlights are adjusted properly and with LED upgrade perfect as it should be. As well oncoming traffic will love you for not blinding.

There was a time not too long ago where there was no led or xenon and I survived it like many others.

There was also a time where the Internet didn’t exist, there were no smartphones, etc, but, you know, progress.

I live in Seattle where, in the winter, 17 hours a day is night. Also spend a lot of time in the mountains skiing, requiring driving on rural roads. Headlights are very important. I, like many others, bought Toyota for bulletproof reliability. The headlights will be replaced, and I still get the rest of the rig that I love.

Read the alignment instructions I provided and you'll see that you are both wrong - although you are a little closer to right.

Where do you find your perfectly level 40+ foot area with a perfectly vertical wall?

I've had my 2020 Nightshade for one month now. I love it. My previous ride was an 06 Taco. I only have one complaint...the night I drove the 4Runner home from the dealer, it was a dark and stormy night (seriously). I had to pull over to check if the headlights were on and working because I could not see the road. They were on. But I won't complain about the headlights....I won't...

2020 ORP with 9,500 miles in 2 months. Surprisingly have only had an one instance of poor calling on apple car play.

I’m not happy with the headlights, even after swapping in some led low beams. Then again I came from having a custom HID retrofit on my previous Subaru Wrx so I guess I can’t really compare apples to oranges. I’ll end up cutting open the headlights on the runner soon I’m sure.

Read the alignment instructions I provided and you'll see that you are both wrong - although you are a little closer to right.

I went with Toyota's 10' rule b/c I don't have 25' level anywhere. I have seen/read the link to the good directions you provided-just don't have the real estate. I leveled my 2011 Trail an inch or so in the front with adjustable Bilsteins and had everyone flashing me with my low beams on. The dealer should have adjusted the headlights when they installed the shocks. I got it fixed but was never happy with the headlights after that-low beams were ineffective. 2020 ORP seems to be no better. Point is none of us wants to blind oncoming drivers yet it would be nice to be able see Bambi as well. We all are seeing a variety of aftermarket headlights on vehicles both good and bad. From an oncoming point of view the German headlights seem to be effective and nonobtrusive though I have not driven one. I know Toyota can rise to the challenge. If they just hadn't purchased a 10 year supply to save $. :heh: It is enough of a safety issue it should be addressed by Toyota.
