2020+ Premium Audio 8-Speaker Details

Looking at ordering a 4runner and a bit confused with the audio packages offered. It appears three options are offered:

Base 8-speaker setup - standard on SR5, TR OR, etc
Premium 8-speaker setup - standard on SR5 Premium, TR OR Premium, etc
JBL 15-speaker setup - standard on limited, TRD Pro, Nightshade

However, looking up the speaker part #'s on Toyota Parts, it seems that the Base 8-speaker and Premium 8-speaker packages have the same speakers. No additional amplifier. Only different part number is the radio head unit.

It almost seems like the different head unit is solely for the added navigation on the Premium 8-speaker package, unless maybe there's a better internal amp in this head unit too?

Has anyone compared the Base 8-speaker audio vs. the Premium 8-speaker audio back-to-back?

Not sure if this is the only thing but I believe the Premium has the Nav which allows you to download maps for offroading. big advantage

Sounds like Toyota to really not add anything, but charge more.

I know they had a separate AMP for the JBL that resides in the back somewhere.

Not sure what's changed. But its also likely if the new 4runners have a center channel they are including the tweeters in each of the main speakers = 15.

Both systems sound mediocre at best.

If it doesn’t play DVDs or have rear seat entertainment, chances are there’s no center channel. Could they be counting the sub as the odd man out?

The premium package only adds navigation. It's the door speakers and power.

JBL has an amp and sub in back, and they count 2-ways in the dash, rear doors, and liftgate as two. So, 4 dash, 4 rear doors, 4 liftgate, sub, and two front door woofers = 15.

Open your hatch and it should be on the right hand side of the cargo area.
