Don't we buy these thngs to get out into the bush to camp? So guess you can say, we want to leave the "modern world" and live like it was 1890!

Shiiiit, when the EMP hits none of these are gonna work anyway. Wish I had a FJ55! No damn computers and will knock the socks off any 4Runner!

Except the FJ55 was notoriously prone to rust, and testing of modern cars showed that EMP blasts have very little effect. No effect if the car is off and minor temporary malfunctions if it's running. Engine shut off is possible, but the cars restart without lasting damage in most cases. Think I'll keep my modern car...

Look up EMP Commission testing if you don't believe me.

I might be in the minority here, but I'm glad I grabbed an 18 pro before they started adding all these features. One of the great things about it is the simplicity and being able to work on it / upgrade it yourself. There were very few things to break, and no nannies installed. Not to mention this will put the starting price well above 50k.

People actually do need to shame needless tech.

The reason is that a lot of car engineering is designed around a useful 15-30 year lifespan. But now all this tech crap is being pushed on cars to make them become useless after 5 years instead of 15-30. And yet they still want us to spend the same money we did for something that used to last longer.

I say demand better. Keyless entry is great until Year 5, when you have to pull the key out anyway cuz the car loses awarebess of you walking away. Or pixels start burning out in the infotainment display and Toyota wants new retail price for a 5 year old technology replacement. And God help you once you become reliant on adaptive cruise control and it stops working.

So don't hate on the folks who want to call out the madness of making vehicle purchases based on tons of little convenience gimmicks instead of forcing Toyota to spend their R&D money on useful, long-lasting core features.

Like, get excited about something like Toyota adding direct and port injection to the 4.0L some day that bumps it to 25mpg, or a front locker, not because they added some passive safety tech or little screens or doodads that will be broken before you've paid off the car.

The only folks who should get excited for that stuff are serial leasers or trade-in addicts, who are Ok with losing $5,000+ in depreciation every 2-3 years because they're rich. And props to you, but that's $15,000+ in 3 trade in cycles that could've gotten an ROI if invested and bought you a turtleback trailer. So is it worth it?

The same exact value prop exists today for cars as 50 years ago.
4ish wheels that get you around without it being likely you'll get hurt, at around 75mph top speed, lasting at least 200,000 miles before you need replacement.

Everything else that's just a convenience item should be considered unnecessary if it can't either be very cheap to fix or last at least half the life of the car.

I was going to post a long rant this morning but you said pretty much what I wanted to say.

The iPhone in my pocket has more advanced tech than any vehicle I can buy. Slap it into a vent clip and you’ll have the latest navigation, the ability to stream any music service through Bluetooth and access to unlimited information. And it’s much easier to update or replace.

I’m looking for useful updates that will give me more power and better fuel mileage. And give me a heated steering wheel!

God forbid you tap someone with your bumper at 3mph. The costs to repair all of those radar sensors is astronomical. With the huge repair costs, your insurance just doubled.

About 8 years now with keyless push button start and I’ve had to change the FOB battery once. Oh the horrors of tech.

Now all they are only basically adding are a updated head unit with Car Play plus some sensors that are pretty much standard on most vehicles and that’s a bad thing?

Yeah, who needs all the nanny stuff like a larger screen, push button start, safety tech (THAT CAN BE TURNED OFF) and updated infotainment.

I hate there's even a screen at all in my truck. Id much rather roll the windows down with my beefy forearms. Auto door locks are for pussies. F your key Fob, I'll carve mine out of steel I dig up with my bare hands. Tire Pressure monitoring? My thumb is all the monitoring I need.

Apple Car play is virusware. Android Auto might as well be spy software.

It's only bad if I can't drop that new head unit in my '13 (understanding I'd probably have to upgrade the steering wheel too) I'm curious how many wiring harness changes there are from 13-19.

Toyota tech is usually fine as often it is been proven reliable enough.

Although, it is annoying as shit when you do something like turn off traction control and the next key turn it is back on again. Some of these switches should be sticky (ie toggle on/off). Some are outright dangerous, particularly the side curtain airbag switch pre-'14, or the fkn nav unit nagging you for confirmation (data usage) minute(s) after you have plugged your phone in. WTF that screen NEVER times out. Yet it won't let you key in any nav functions, even presets, while the vehicle is moving.

IMO, do it right in the first place, give me the ability to change it (in a lot of cases this is possible), or no thanks. Much like any good piece of software; you define the UX to your liking.

Stop this talk. You don't really think my insurance rate will double because of the safety features Toyota added to this vehicle, do you? My Pilot has every single safety feature available and I pay around $100/month in insurance and it was a $47K CUV. (which I regret purchasing, but that's another topic)

I don't think it's "fear." The fact is a lot of us were attracted by the simplicity of the pro in the first place. If I had wanted all the features, I would have gone with the limited version. It's nice to be able to replace bumpers, grills, etc on a vehicle. It's nice to be able to add your own amps, speakers, etc for cheap and make the vehicle how you want it. I see that ability to customize being eroded.

I've been wanting a dark green 4runner since before I bought my own, and now they come out with one after I've already paid mine off and in what is likely its last year...

If I didn't love my truck and not having payments, I'd go down and put a deposit today. All the new Tech sounds awesome too, but I also love all the new Safety tech.

Absolutely, and I think the reason anyone buys a Toyota is the reliability, isn't it? I would trust that they've made these systems bulletproof before introducing them into the 4Runners - they've had years to iron out the kinks on all their other vehicles after all.
