2020 TRD Pro Updates - Army Green & Push Button Start

Well, there will never be a V8 4Runner again. Or even an engine as big as 4.0L.... so don't shoot the meesenger.

The GX460 is a cash cow above it, and there's no global demand for a dual-injected 4.0L. The 5AT stays until the 6th gen due to diff ratios. The 6th gen gets lighter with 3.5L and hybrid 3.5L.

We are now 5-10 years out from full electrification of all passenger vehicles. Toyota is developing nearly no new gasoline engines, and the 3.5L v6 is being used all over the place.

You should drive the f150 10 speed before you make that statement, it’s flawless. I avg 20 mpg with 35”tires driving moderately or 15 hammering on it. I have no doubt you're being truthful with your 10 speed. My experience with a 10 spd has been horrible. We have a 2017 Honda Pilot with that transmission and it's always hunting gears and is so jerky it almost ruins the driving experience. Ford is not Honda and I'm not comparing the two but my experience is opposite of yours.

After 2 years on the market Honda "adjusted" their transmission to make it somewhat smoother but it still remains the Achilles heel of that otherwise fine vehicle.

Not sure if it helps, but the Pilot has a 9spd auto... and that transmission has been universally dogged in both the Pilot and MDX for the reasons you state. I think the most recent years are decent, but yeah, that one was not a great example in it's early years.

Lexus' 10AT is wonderful also.

My man you are 100% right and I appreciate the correction. I'm a little upset about buying the vehicle because I know & like cars and did my research. Nearly every review said the transmission was bad and yet I still jumped into one because the interior layout was so well done. Give that vehicle a new transmission and a simple volume knob and it would be class leading. As it is now it's middle of the pack with the Atlas clearly on top.

All that being said my wife doesn't drive as aggressively as I do so the transmission doesn't bother her at all. She loves the vehicle and we'll likely keep it until the 100K warranty runs out. We've driven it to Colorado from Texas 5 times in the 2 years we've owned it and it's a road trip machine, perfect for long hauls.

Going back to the OP. Would love to see a green 5th Gen. I think it's long over due. Plus, not many vehicles are green nowadays. The TRD color lineup is pretty nice though.


Also the roof rack looks pretty rugged. Would like to retrofit one on my 4th Gen.

Too many mods to do and not enough time haha.

Since Army Green will be a TRD Pro exclusive color, I'd love for them to bring back Imperial Jade Mica for the other trims.

If my memory serves me correctly, that would be an earlier model year introduction than most recent 4Runners. That would put it around July for an on-sale date for the 2020, but I feel like new model year 4Runners are usually November/December historically.

When I tried to get more details out of their PR team, they told me the updates for the rest of the lineup would be released closer to the on sale date... so I'm just trying to figure out when that might be.

It’s port installed. I got my 2018 TRDP via a wait list. Once my turn was up for the next cavalry blue issued to my dealer, I was notified by them that the VIN had been created and I was asked what extras I wanted (mats, sliding tray, exhaust tip, iPhone charging cables, etc.). I only asked for the back cargo floor mat since I use Husky mats everywhere else. Didn’t want any of their overpriced extras. Dealer finalized the order and 6 weeks later it arrived from the port. With nothing extra other than my cargo mat.



Don’t let them tell you anything is a mandatory add on. The dealers get a cut of port extras. That’s why one of the dealers near me adds that stupidly obnoxious rear 3rd brake light flasher to every car they get from the port. It’s an extra $250 they can charge for what is likely a $3 diode.



To answer your leveling question, yes, without the tray or a 3rd row (not available on pro), the cargo area is slightly recessed from the back seats when folded down. About 1.5 inches I think.

Sliding tray is not port installed. It is a factory option rather than an accessory. When I build a 4Runner for factory order in my employee system, sliding tray shows up in the options section. I can adjust accessories up until ~1 month until delivery but options are set 3 months out when the order is initially submitted.

I stand corrected. Thanks. Let me ask you something if you don’t mind. When I plopped down my wait list deposit for the 2018 cavalry I have, the dealer told me they have no control over what vehicles get alotted to them and they are stuck with what they get. That’s why my time on the wait list was a crap shoot. They said they had to do a swap with another dealer who had a customer waiting for a white TRDP when their shop was getting a blue (and vice versa).

Now I hear you speak of putting orders in, and my guy said the same thing last week when I put my deposit down for the 2020 army green (what I had always been waiting for). Did the system for vehicle allotment change since the 2018 cycle?

No, but now I have it in my LE I can't ever imaging going back to a key again. It's one of those you don't know what you're missing things until you have it.

I'd like hands free unlock and remote start for getting the car turned on when I'm in a ski lodge or campsite. But aside from that, it's a hassle after a few years. My wife's otherwise reliable Mazda3 (2014 model year) sometimes doesn't recognize when I've walked away, so to be sure, I have to get the damn keyfob out to lock it, lest someone just walk away with some stuff from inside my car while I'm at the gym, etc.

Problem with modern "safety" features are that some are nice like auto high beams and adaptive cruise control, but things like lane departure and pre-collision are utter garbage that ruin the car completely.

Hyperbole much? That's your opinion, where as I believe it enhances the car and I'd love to have adaptive cruise control.
