2020 TRD Pro Updates - Army Green & Push Button Start

I'm in the same situation as you. If you don't care about the tech you may be better with the 2019, you can always replace the head unit later. I'm going to wait for the 2020 because I want push button start and the newer head unit (2019 Head Unit/Software is appalling to me), I don't care much about the Toyota Safety Sense features, they may get in the way if you plan to do a bunch of mods to the front, but overtime manufacturers may modify designs to incorporate the changes. I don't think you can go wrong either way you decide.

Aftermarket front bumper support is definitely going to be an issue, but after talking with C4 it seems that at least their full height bull bar option should clear the sensors.

My 4Runner was in the shop for some upgrades and I had a loaner for a few days. It was a brand spanking new Rav4 hybrid. I think it was 2nd from the top in terms of trim. Had everything Push button start, TSS, and a pretty sizable screen for the dash. With the exception of key-less entry, I didn't care for anything else. It was nice to be able to just walk up to the car and open the door without fumbling for the keyfob to unlock. But other than that, everything else was annoying. Every time I was parking or driving in a tight space, beeps were going off everywhere. The Rav4 thought I was too close to the walls, other cars, etc... Even the lane departure warning was beeping at me. Eventually I figured out how to turn off all that, but going back to your question, if it were me, this would negate the reason for getting the 2020. Why pay for TSS and not use it? As for the 8" screen, you can always just upgrade the head unit to an aftermarket one. I personally swapped mine out for a Pioneer but if I were to do it now, I'd go for the Alpine 9".

Anyways, good luck in your quest!

Don't get me wrong, TSS-P is nice to have and I'll use it (Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection and Automatic Braking, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with full stop technology, plus Automatic High Beams) except for lane departure, which the beeping would drive me nuts, but I could live without TSS-P. Push-Button Start, new 8" head unit, and rear USB ports is enough to push me to a 2020, however I've spent a lot of time considering a 2019 with the Alpine 9", just don't want to drop another $1k+ to replace the head unit on a new car right now.

So, I haven't had these annoyances in a Tacoma with TSS, or a Lexus RX450h. Is TSS an inferior system to Lexus' LSS? I'd assume they'd be the same, but the Lexus is my wife's daily which I do cart around sometimes and it seems mostly non-intrusive. I drive the Tacoma on the weekends and take it camping and off-roading, and don't have any qualms about TSS.

The only times the safety systems have really pissed me off and given me a scare are with the Lexus and it's BSM emergency braking, it's so stupid sensitive that if I'm backing out and it senses a pedestrian coming from behind me 100 feet away it'll slam the brakes, giving me a heart attack in the process. Other than that I feel all the other features work as they should.

From what I saw on the other forums particularly is that some people drive like *******s and don't realize it or want to admit it. Some guys complain that the adaptive cruise control leaves too much distance on the closest setting, which means they typically like tailgating without it.

A hit or miss feature is the proximity sensors when parking, some of us might are pros at parking already and it's more of an annoyance to have it beeping at you while you're trying to park, but I think there are quite a few out there who could use it, but probably won't and will continue to park 10 feet out of the spot, or diagonally, or too close to my car. Worse are the people who have the sensors and still can't park for the life of them!

I can't really say I remember having many issues with lane departure assist, except that it has gone off when I've underestimated a curvy road and gone over the line, veering slightly into another empty lane. On the Lexus particularly it's excellent about telling if you're changing lanes, or just swerving/veering. Now, I don't know if that will be the case for the 4Runner, but if it is, then I truly think it's nothing to worry about.

Full disclosure, I could live without TSS and it's not a main selling point for me for the 2020s, but I don't think it's necessarily a negative. Adaptive cruise control is nice, but I wonder if that will need recalibration after a lift, and if they'll charge for that service. I really hate the sensor box as well. The other upgrades, though not many, are welcome. The new gauge cluster is nice with the individual TPMS readout, and so is the bigger touch screen infotainment system.

I think the bottom line is, most drivers suck, on road and off road, because they think everyone else's driving but their own is bad. Some of those who are vehemently against safety features could really use them for the safety of others, but it's just that, they'll ignore them even if they had them. As humans we don't like being told we're wrong or admitting we're at fault, it's just our nature. Sometimes that means safety features that work as intended make us unhappy.

I'm ambivalent towards TSS, I think the 4Runner is great with and great without, you decide what's important to you.

Since CarPlay/Android Auto are really the future at this point, for most buyers, it would be prudent to just wait for the 2020 - both for resale and future tech scaling. As others have noted, the TSS features are easily manageable and can be turned off.

If it was me, I would not consider buying a 2019 unless there was a SMOKING deal to be had.

Truth. Gecko is a wise man.

Not that you are insinuating that I was a bad driver, but most of the beeps came from parking. Pulling in and out of places. During the time I had this loaner I was running a lot of errands and I guess that's were the annoyance came from. Driving on the road was mostly fine but once I started pulling into parking lots or even going in and out of my garage, the Rav4 was screaming. This is the same garage I park my 4Runner in which takes up every square inch. The Rav4 was complaining if it didn't have a solid 2 ft gap all around it.

Absolutely not insinuating that you're a bad driver! Like I said, the beeps will bother those of us who already park well. For those like my wife, she really appreciates that the beeps and the on screen indicators show just how much further she can go, incrementally. That's all. It's one of those preference things, so I get both sides. I personally can do with and without, and sometimes the beeps actually help me in bad visibility parking situations. Didn't mean to potentially offend you, but with that cleared up, I'm sure you get what I mean about "those" drivers!

I really like the park sensors on my Limited. My garage is tight and I need to pull up as far as I can to help fit the other car in the garage. With the front sensors I can get it to within a couple inches of the front wall.

You guys realize the lane departure warning is only going off if you’re swerving around and departing your lane, right? If you’re constantly getting it while driving you seriously need to re-evaluate how you drive a vehicle.

CarsDirect has reported MSRP for MY2020. This is the first report I’ve seen with pricing for the new models.

  • TRD Pro: $50,885 (increase of $2,975 from last year)
  • ORP: $43,340 (up $2,100)
  • OR: $39,765 (up $1,280)
  • SR5P: $40,335 (up $2,100)
  • SR5: $37,140 (up $735)

Still no details on the reported Venture or rumored Overland editions.

Or... Or... You could be living in a growth city and construction is everywhere requiring street widening. These are usually full of missing or temporary detour lines which wreck havoc on the lane departure warnings.

That's the scenario I was facing :(

They didn’t mention the Limited or Nightshade trims other than comparing the TRD Pro to the Nightshade 4WD at $49,780 with destination charge ($1,095), so I tried backing into it.

Comparing that to the 2019 Nightshade 4WD at $48,995 with destination, that’s an increase of $785. I’m guessing that that the Limited will be similar, which is roughly in-line with the $735 increase for the base SR5.

I’m curious as to what else is being added to the Premium trims to justify the much larger increase in those trims? Can’t be just the addition of Smart Key?

Hopefully they continue the “Keep it Wild” discount, but I’m not too optimistic.

Man that’s a huge price increase! $3,000 last year and another $3,000 this year!!

So my ordered army green will be $6765 more than what I paid for my cavalry blue.

I’m questioning my order now. Seriously. Is TSS, sunroof, JBL and a new head unit, CarPlay, push button start and keyless doors worth $6765? I want to say yes but my guilt may overpower my desires.

Thankfully I deal with an “honest” dealer that doesn’t mark up pros.

Not sure if this is new or not, but I found it on Toyota's page and is slightly different than the carsdirect info. Looks like they've made some minor changes recently to the news website.

Talk about milking a cow till it's dry. How the hell does Toyota think they can justify the price hike by adding an 8" screen. This is some crazy Apple style marketing.

Well, this solidified my decision on getting an ORP instead of a Pro. Glad I called my dealer and said to wait on allocating a Pro until I know final pricing. Looks like I’ll have a good amount of $$$ left to mod with.
