2022 GX or Pro ?

when I was finally able to upgrade from my Forester I seriously considered the GX, something coming off a lease was very similar in price to a new 4R. I was willing to put up with the ugly catfish grille just for the comfort and improved capability. But what pretty quickly convinced me on the 4R was the GX was no bigger inside than the Forester, while the 4R had a ton more space. Much more practical for camping and trips, but YMMV of course.

I find this extremely interesting, given that I'm currently looking to buy an off-road SUV. I've been considering either a 4R or a Wrangler but I should expand my horizons. Thanks!

EDIT: the Lexus doesn't have appear to have a locking rear diff, unfortunately. And the ground clearance & approach/departure angles aren't great. So no.

Don't let the GX/Prado and 200/570 crew let you think that ATRAC does it all.

Overseas models get more or less the same package as the 4R TRDOR / TRDP models with OEM rear lockers (300 has front / rear available).

Sometimes you just need a locker, as in situations with atrac it requires loss of traction (slipping) to activate which can instantly kill momentum.

TRDOR and TRDP models allow use of both ATRAC and locker - just like Aussie market Prado's.

If the GX, LX, and LC came with factory lockers then they would be king. 1999 was the last US LC with a locker I believe.

If you haven't test driven a GX I'd HIGHLY recommend doing so. It's a completely different vehicle in regards to overall driving feel, ride, etc. That V8 is silky smooth and offers good power. The interior is much nicer (although still very outdated) with better seats. It's silent inside and just cruises down the road without any sort of drama. It is truly a pleasure to drive. Maintenance is a bit more with the timing belt, but you don't sacrifice any reliability. That 4.6 is bulletproof. Also keep in mind, you do get better service at Lexus dealers with loaners. It is a WAY better on road vehicle for those long trips, so throw a good set of tires on it and you probably have all the capability you need. I'd be lying if I said I'd rather be in a 4Runner on long drives than a GX.

I have a 19 pro and wheel it quite a bit. My wife has a newer GX. Hers is light years better on the highway and even gets better gas mileage as my mods have hurt MpGs. My pro is getting 15.5–16 on Ave. The plan for the GX is to give it to my kid some day and mod it for wheeling then.

Me personally, I’d only get the GX if you are gonna go all in on mods right out of the gate. Sitting next to my pro, the stock GX looks like a highlander/grocery getter.

But on 35s….

The 4.7 in the old GX470, had a timing belt. The GX460 has the 4.6, with a timing chain.

Oh, no crap. I thought it was a belt the whole time. +1 more for the GX.

Don't forget that Toyota specs premium for the GX. That's more in fuel costs over time plus the reduced mpg

you wont be disappointed. i have a 17 pro and 19 gx and i much prefer the power and creature comforts of the gx. the things i like about the pro more is the lower weight and the hatch.
