Happy as a teenager watching his first porn. Went to Richmond, VA this morning. 271.1 miles, 12.142 gallons. Had the cruise control set at around 70 most of the trip too.

Gas mileage on the return trip will suffer though. :)

Seriously, you've been whipped around from one side to the other with the mileage on that thing. This is the same 4R that you were struggling to get 15 from, correct?
 
Had the same thing happen to me this past weekend. During the winter, I was getting about 13-14 MPG doing nothing but local, stop-and-go driving. Changed the plugs (and thought about changing out the wires). Cleaned the throttle body. Cleaned the MAF. Changed the fuel filter. Started getting 15-16 MPG around town. Took it out of town for the weekend and got almost 23 MPG each way on a 150-mile trip. Between 55 and 70 MPH, but had some bumper-to-bumper traffic in the city. I couldn't believe it. I've owned my 4Runner since 2004 and I don't think I've ever gotten more than 20-21 MPG before on the highway. Honestly, before the simple maintenance stuff, I was getting in the neighborhood of 19 MPG on the highway. I wish I'd done the maintenance earlier.
 
Yeah, same one. It's all sorted now though. It did great. I averaged 15.3 on the return trip, pulling another 3rd Gen on a UHaul dolly at 60 with the overdrive off. It was sitting around 3000 RPM the whole trip. I was impressed with that too.

This was after a 10 mile drive from the town of Tijeras back into Albuquerque.
I was driving 75-80 MPH most of the way and slowed down to 70 MPH for the last mile or so in city limits. I took the picture at the first stoplight on Lomas and Eubank. 4-Ripcord and BFAD are familiar with this trek.

Just tuned up my Runner last month and replaced the OEM plug wires with the Blue NGK wires.
 
For reference, I had a stock '96 Limited a couple of yrs ago with about 140K on the clock and it would get 22-24 mpg mixed driving, and it got 18-19 mpg in town. I live in Colorado and all of my vehicles, diesel and gas as well as motorcycles, get somewhat better mpg here than sea-level. Also, my '04 V8 TR4 got about same city driving as the '96 and 20-22 mpg on the hwy.
 
Ran out to Williamsport, PA on Thursday, about 200 miles each way. Filled up before I left, was way behind schedule so I was doing about 80 or so the while way home. Filled it up again tonight, I got 19.99 MPG's out of that tank. I call that good.
 
I just did a run down to Corrolla, NC about 260 miles round trip. I did about 20 miles of 4x4 beach driving, about 40 miles of slow speed crawling through town, and about 190 miles of mixed highway/backroads. I got 19.6 mpgs, which is pretty good for a truck with 342k on it now, check engine light on and needing a tune-up, and lifted.

That's about what I get now. Stock 98 5-speed 4x4. Wondering where I'll be with a LC lift and 33's..



As for towing another 4runner and getting 15.6mpg is DAMN good! Hell, in my "old" tacama (09 Sport DC 6-speed) I would drop right down to 10-13MPG towing anything! (one or two sleds)
 
average about 17.5 mpg driving 'somewhat' aggressively here in southern cali. in the process of lifting which will help with it too :bravo:
 
Best I have ever averaged on an entire tank is 18.3mpg. But when I go on trips I'm always loaded and hitting mountain passes.
 
I got 20.2 MPGs recently - driving aggressively (70MPH) on the highway.... Some 50 odd miles were loaded down with about 500 lbs of stuff...
