22re auto and 31" tires

Anyone here with the 22RE and an auto running 31" tires? I was not thinking of them until do to the reports of the power train combo being such a slug. But after getting mine running and driving it, I don't see the slug that most talk about. So I am kind of thinking about going with the bigger tires. Yes I did search but didn't come up with anything.

Put the 31s on earlier this year. Still pulls fine, for a 22re.

I had a 22re/auto, had 31s and stock 4.30 diffs when I bought it. Ran it that way for years. It was a slug. Didn't accelerate for beans, couldn't climb in overdrive at all and had to drop to second for anything steep, it was horrible. I got beat up a mountain pass by a Suzuki pulling a trailer, that's how bad it was. Of course, that's also at a minimum of 5000 feet elevation, you might have better luck at sea level.

But honestly, if you're going to stick with the 22re/auto, and you want to upsize, I'd go 33s and 5.29s and not look back. It'll cost more, but 33 is an awesome all-around size for these trucks and the 5.29s will keep you right in the factory powerband.

What kind of MPGs are you guys getting with this combo?

My last yota actually my sons, had 5.29s and 33s then eventually 37s and dual cases. But I'm not "planning" on going that crazy with this one.

I was averaging about 17 mixed, I'd get around 20 on road trips.

16-17 mixed. Not too hilly around here, but some days my foot is heavier than others.

I drive alot of hills. HUGE difference between 4.10s and 4.56s with 31s. I get about 20-22mpg and can still pull in 5th on the interstate now.

4.10s were fine on flats but Id would have to downshift on most uphills

Hey KidV, would that wheel gear combo hold true for a speed as well or does it make a difference? I have the 22RE 5 speed and have 33" on it it seems a little sluggish coming up a hill where I live but didn't know if it was the tires r just fuel problem. ( I just bought the truck so not too sure what to expect)

22R/5spd will be a bit sluggish with 33" tires, but people have run that combo for decades. To get the pep and mpg back, you could install some 4.88 gears.

What fourwd1 said. Between the slightly different transmission gearing and power loss in the chain drive tcase, the manual tolerates bigger tires a little better than the automatic, but it's still a 22re and not a lot of power to play with. See here: Gearratiosanddiffs.

I will be going to 4.88 on my 4runner when I go with bigger tires. I am running 31s and with a 4.10 ratio and it work ok, I do need to downshift when it comes to hills for sure.
