22RE Cams? "red line"? Other questions?

What is the highest RPMs it will rev to in neutral?

I have gone to 6,000 rpms Im sure its not much higher than that tho lol.

I normally shift around 3,000RPMs, what is the official "shift point"?

Also, the "red line" is the max rpms where the engine cant go any faster right?

If so, how does adding performance parts like cams (someone said performance cams raises redlines and hp) raise the redline?

What creates a "redline" ?

The sound on ricers when they do burnouts or something and they "red line" it and it makes a weird sound almost like a pause in the revving like it slows down for a split second or something... does anyone know what im talking about? Is that bad for your motor? Ive never done that.

i usually shift at 4500, but i am a speed demon teenager. but the "pause" at redline you are referring to, is your rev limiter. this limits your revs, so that you cannot go any higher, causing detonation, and basically blowing your engine to smithereens. if you ever hear that "pausing" when you are at redline, you will risk that chance of throwing a connecting rod, and overheating, skipping your cam, or basically blowing everything apart. i would highly suggest not hitting the rev limiter on your truck if you want it to last very long. if you want to hear that noise, dont make it yourself, just go and watch a drifting event. :) a redline, is a point where an engine stops it max rpm range, stops making power, and starts to break your engine. if you ever want to see an engine blown, just like youtube or google brick on gas in neutral, or just like blowing an engine. any other questions?

It's not a good idea to redline your engine while in neutral and not a good idea to shift an older 22re at redline on a regular basis either. I always shifted my 22re trucks between 3,200 and 4,500 rpm's with an ocasional 5-6k rpm shift to pass someone. The biggest determining factor on engine redlines is the weight of internal rotating mass and the strength of these parts. Race engines use lightweight forged parts and better balancing to help them live at high rpm's as well as modified oiling systems. Rev limiters prevent over revving which can cause catastrophic failure. Also increasing the volumetric efficiency of an engine will help it make horsepower at higher rpm's than stock.

A 22RE with stock valve springs starts to float the valves around 5500 rpms anyway so there really never any reason to go near that. My engine has had head work done to it and I'm confident it would stay together past that but I really don't look for muck speed when I'm driving the truck so I never push it that hard. Not only that, but I get tired of working on the damned thing so i go easy on it when I don't need to push it.

If I'm in a hurry I take the '03 V8 4runner or the motorcycle.

I've never had a tachometer in the truck so I just shift by ear when it sounds like it needs it.

What does that do? loss of power?
Ive been to 6,000 and it does seem to be a lil weird lol... like power loss or something thanks the the input

All engines have a peak HP point at a certain rpm and then start to fall off in power. For a stock 22RE I think it's somewhere between 4500 and 5000. If one assumes that it's 4500, and one was racing the silly thing, then one would want to shift at or below this peak HP rpm. But then one probably wouldn't want to race a stock 22RE....would they? :bigok:

lol I dont race, I try to keep up LOL
My friends:
'01 Maxmima w/ cold air inttake & exhaust
'91 Maxima stock
'91 pickup (clutch, exhaust, cams, head, cold air intake, and more) V6 3.0

The pickup is lifted with 31" tires but it still halls.

The pickup is the slowest of those 3 but its faster than mine, i try to keep up with them LOL but im way too slow lol
