So I just finished disassembling and reassembling my fuel injection system for a sixth time, finally having all 4 injectors working, and finally stopping the leaking fuel...
Starting up my engine, it runs fine and the engine sounds great, except for a kind of light grinding sound. I'm thinking that my timing chain might need replacement, or that it may just be the seven month old oil. I'm planning on changing the oil soon, if not today before driving it very far.
but on to my question
When I was troubleshooting my fuel injector problem, I temporarily tried replacing my '87 ECU with one from an '88. It had [/i]seemed[/i] to run better, and with the misfiring cylinder, I was seeing a 'check engine' light that was not lighting with my '87 ECU.
Today, after fixing everything, I attempted to swap the ECUs again, to see what happened with all 4 cylinders firing. At first, all I got was a lower idle speed, but after reving the engine up, I got a little bit of a misfire, a puff of additional smoke out the exhaust, and then it started to run a bit rough, misfiring every now and then, with a regular rhythm (but not fast enough to be on one cylinder, every time it fires). I also got a check engine light.
I swapped back to the original ECU... no check engine light, but the same low idle and occasional misfire.
There seems to be obvious differences in ECUs from the 87 and 88 years... Anyone know what they are? Any ideas on my problem?
