22RE Fuel Economy

I am a fairly new owner of a 1987 4Runner ( 22RE ) and seem to be averaging approximately 22 mpg on a mixture of city and highway driving. Are these fuel numbers in line with what others are experiencing?

You've got a MT with smaller tires, I'm guessing? I was getting about 16 mixed with my automatic and 31s on stock gearing. That went to ~18 when I fixed my gearing to match my tire size.

Goodyear P235 / 75R15 ( 5 speed manual ) and I drive at speeds my grandmother would have considered conservative.

On 31's and 4.10's MT, I've gotten anywhere from 14.0 to 22.0mpg off a tank. That ranges from nonstop uphill and stop-go city driving, to an 80% highway tank.

Come on, I can get 18+ on a worn out 22R (carbed), 36's, and hundreds of pounds of extra weight from the second t-case, bumpers, sliders, and other armor.

I've been averaging 21city, 24 highway in my 87 with 22re/5speed, 235/85r/16's

Yep. For an engine introduced in the early 80's in a truck weighing two short tons, I think they do fine on fuel economy. If gas prices go through the roof i could consider a 2rz/3rz swap/vehicle purchase, but thats the future.

If it makes you feel better, my buddy's old 84 2.5L carb'd Jeep Cherokee pulled a whopping 10 miles per gallon city. Stock.
