possible fuel pump failer

After 23 years of reliable service, my 2002 4Runner Limited unfortunately experienced a failure. While driving at approximately 65 mph, the engine suddenly shut off without warning. Thankfully, I was able to safely pull over, as there was ample shoulder space on the highway.

Based on the symptoms, I suspect the fuel pump may have failed. When the ignition was turned to the "ON" position, there was no audible sound coming from the fuel tank area, which typically indicates that the fuel pump is not engaging.

I would think electrical issue for sure.
I personally had a main relay fail on my Honda Pilot 2004. Dealer thought it was fuel pump but I towed it to independent shop that found the $50 relay.

Well it looks like the fuel pump failed, I requested a Denso replacement. They confirmed power at the pump and the pump not working. At least I have a second 4runner to use until I get daily driver back.

Well, the fuel pump (in a 3rd gen) NEVER turns on with key-on, engine-off. It only runs in the 'START' position or when the engine is running. There is no 'prime' function and the fuel pump stays off if the engine is not running for safety. (secondarily, the OEM fuel pump is ridiculously quiet)

I'd suspect you have a different issue.

You are correct, it was a broken timing belt. The sad part is this is the 3rd one in less than 50k miles.

You say 23 years of reliable service. Then contradict yourself on the last post by admitting the timing belt "failed" 2 times previous to this "failure "!!! So 3 broke timing belts all on a "low mileage " rig? Something isn't right at all!!!! This time of the engine shutting off suddenly I would have went straight back to the timing belt before thinking the fuel pump first. My question is what timing belt components did you use and who did the timing belt job? Also did it break the belt the last 2 times or did a pulley lock up? Don't throw a belt back on and go, you need to do some investigation as to why this keeps occurring. It will not fix itself.

It should be clear from how the starter sounded...

What parts are you using for the timing belt? OEM or an Aisin kit from a RELIABLE seller should be what you use...

This is the only time that timming belt broke. I replaced the original timing belt the first time in 2019 including all the pulleys and waterpump. Well after 2 years the waterpump started to leak so when I replaced the waterpump the timing belt had cracks all over it so I replaced it again. I thought both times they were oem toyota belts but they didn't last that long. I am having a family shop doing the work this time since it broke down near his place. It would cost me a lot to have it towed over 35 miles to my home.

eBay or Amazon purchase? Real OEM belts last a LONG time (though yes, still replace every 90k...).

I do mine at 120k, but I change the idlers, tensioner and the WP at the same time. They don't break, unless coolant leaks on them or some rotating component locks up on you. Almost time for my 240k change.

I reached that conclusion by reading every post in the mammoth YotaTech megathread on TBs. If it broke before 120k, there was always a reason.

I suspect counterfeit parts or something is wrong. I never heard of anyone going through belts so quickly before.

I don't fault anyone for waiting longer than the OEM interval, as long as they know what they are doing - it is very conservative.

I just did mine with the Aisin kit at 160,000, it honestly looked perfect, though. It was a toyota belt, so I'm guessing original.

Hopefully the OP gets that figured out, that doesn't sound fun to pay for. I'd have to imagine something it wrong for it to break in 4 years.

Just take the timing belt cover off every year to check on condition.

My factory belt went 220k it was insane how cracked it was. Water pump was pissing out coolant so I knew it was time to change it back then but everything was still good! That was 4 years ago my runner is doing great with the new timing belt kit.
