So I bought a 1992 4runner with the 22re and 200 000 km on it last month. Typical fender rust, but otherwise in really good shape.
Last week, the heater in the cab started to pump out luke warm air. Then the next day when I started it up, it idled up way too fast (2500ish rpm) then started to surge between 1000-2800 rpm. At the same time, I was getting a bunch of white smoke that seemed to be very humid out of the tail pipe. So I started to get worried about the HG and checked the rad - which was low.
Also, while it idled, there were bubbles coming out of the rad fluid. Finally, there's that whitish-milky looking stuff on the bottom of the oil filler cap. However, the oil on the dipstick looks fine. So whatever contamination has occurred was not catastrophic or anything.
So today I got a compression tester and tested all the cylinders - and they're all in the 175-185 range. Tested them again this evening while the engine was cold and the number 2 was a little lower - 165 - but not outside of normal.
So what's going on? If the HG was gone to the point where I was getting antifreeze into the oil, it should show up on the compression test, shouldn't it? If this was the timing chain eating into the sidewall, there should be more contamination, right? And how could the engine surge/ whole bunch of white smoke start, then seem to stop? Can you have an intermittent HG leak?
If anybody has any ideas before I pull the head, that'd be great. If not, I guess I pull the rocker arm cover, inspect the timing chain and guide, then get on to the HG - right?
