22re is sputtering? thoughts?

My little daily driver (1990 2wd pickup) is starting to sputter a bit. I don't know anything about the 22re engine, as I have only had this truck a month or so and have hardly tinkered with it. 130K miles on it.

I replaced the rotor and the cap (lots of build up on the contacts) The wires look pretty new, so I am "guessing" the previous owner did the plugs recently.

The new rotor and cap made it quieter, but it still makes some random "pops". I only hear it while idling.

Does anyone have any troubleshooting advice, for what I should try next? The longer this truck lasts, the longer my T4R lasts...its my sacrificial driver!

Thanks.

My guess is there may be an injector clogged a little. Maybe try some injector cleaner, try some BG44k my friend had the same thing and it seemed to clear it up for him

you guess the previous owner replaced the plugs? for $2 a piece and they are easy to get to on that engine, I would replace them and do the wires while you are at it. I if those don't make it run better, the fuel filter is a pain in the butt to get to but also could be the problem. It's on the pass side of the block between the starter and oil filter.

Thanks for the responses. Yeah, I guess I should just buy new spark plugs. That's cheap troubleshooting. I am just trying to put as little money possible into this truck, as it just takes "mod" money from my toy (see avaiter). I will try the plugs, the cleaner and the filter (in that order), and post up what I find out.

Thanks.
