22RE lifter issues

I've looked around and couldn't find anything specific. I have lifter noise on my 22RE that I have yet to fix. I've got some free time in the next couple weeks and figure that it's finally time to fix it. I've read through my Haynes manual, and it looks like I have to replace the head gasket to do this correctly, because of the way the lifters are connected. If there's an easier way to do it, I'd love to go that route, I haven't done anything yet. I like to look things up and have an idea of what I'm getting myself into before I dive in.

section 1-19 pf my Haynes manual has "Valve clearance check and adjust" that does not require the removal of the head. It detail the proper way to measure and adjust your rockers. You may get lucky and cure your noisy motor by doing this!

if your valve clearances are to spec and the problem isn't in the head but in the lifters unfortunately you will need to remove the head. and while you got it off you may aswell replace the head gasket. me and a friend just did a head gasket on an old e30 he has and it took about total 10 hours. if you have a few weeks time free you should have no problem overhauling your engine in this time

Okay bringing this one up again. I'm blew the headgasket and of course had to replace it. I've got to do a valve adjustment when I put it all back together. Does anybody know the clearance on a 22RE cold? My haynes manual gives spec for a roasting hot engine, but I was hoping to finish it all in one fell swoop. Anyone know this? Thanks
