22RE swap- 94 engine to 87 body

I have an '87 4Runner SR5 in nice condition without an engine. The original 22RE died and was chopped out by the PO without mercy to the wiring harness.

Would a 22RE from a '94 pick-up complete with the engine harness and ECU be much more difficult than swapping in an '87 22RE and harness? Will I have any dash harness issues with the '94 ECU/engine harness?

I have another '87 parts vehicle with a running 22RE with a blown head gasket if that would help.

I don't see why it would be a problem, the only difference that comes to mind between the years is emissions stuff.

If you have both trucks, just compare the two. Look at all the connectors on the various sensors, injectors, ECM's etc.
It would probably be better to use the harness and ECM from the 94.
Things change in 7 years.
In 87 the EFI and Emissions ECM's were separate, by 94 they were combined.
But you're going to have to dig in to determine how easily the 94 harness will integrate into the 87.

Thanks for the input. I'll spend some time this weekend vetting the '94 motor and comparing the two wiring schemes side-by-side.

If it were me, I would find an 87 harness. Toyota integrates parts of the engine wiring harness in with the body wiring harness. I would be willing to bet that you'll have to do a lot of work on the newer harness for it to work with your older body wiring harness. I had to replace my wiring harness on my 88 4runner when I rebuilt my engine (long story) and I found one on pirate4x4 for $50. If you can find one for close to that cost it would be easier to just get the one that is made for your 4runner.
