22re thrust washers

History: When I pulled the 22re out of my 86 4runner (not the black one in my sig), I found that the thrust washers were lying on the bottom of the oil pan. I did not think much of it, as I planned to do a full rebuild. I found out during the rebuild that this was not the true 22re that came stock, and it was actually a 22r with the fuel injection added on.

Problem: I bought a standard size bearing kit for a 22r. I went to put in the trust washers and the new ones I got are too big to fit. I can only get one side in and it does not leave near enough room to fit the other side

Question: Does anyone know if there is a difference between 22r/re thrust washers sizes? I would hate to buy the 22re thrust washers to find they are the same too.
Is it possible that they crank is from a different motor, like a 20r?

Look around on the crank. It should be stamped for the engine it belongs to.

Fwiw: the bottom end of the 22re is the same as the 22r. The 20r is different though and as far as I know the re fuel injection won't bolt on to the 20r head.

You sure they gave you the right washers?

The kit came with bearings and the washers. The bearings were right. The washers have a stamp that says "STD" on them, so they are not meant for a machined crank. I have rebuild 22re's in the past and they appear to be the same washers.

I just meant the crank alone could be a 20r. I know the head and block are 22r. I do not know anything about the 20r so I thought it might be possible.

I will look for the stamp on the crank tomorrow and see what it says. I am considering just getting a different motor entirely. Found an 88 turbo supra for sale with no title. Tempting.....

After a little research, it appears that even though the rod bearings are the same, the thrust washers are different from 22r and a 22re. So they did send me the wrong set, as I bought them for a 82-84 22r.

So in case someone has the same problem, make sure you got the right year of washers.
