22rre strange noise? with video

hey so i went out to look at purchasing a 4runner today, its a 95 22re 5spd with 290k km. it was in pretty good shape for the price (1900$). it drove beautifuly. but i did notice a strange sound coming from the motor. rather then trying to describe it i took a video.

the noise happens when you let off the throttle, it sounds deep and grindy?

i figured the best place to go was here, the owner is also curious about the noise and felt awful when i found it.

I don't know if I would stress over that too much. Nothing sounds bad, that noise doesn't sound destructive. I wonder if it has something to do with the motor suddenly losing all of the air through the intake too quick? Not really sure. I would maybe clean the throttle body and see if it has a bunch of gunk built up in there.

It's hard to say exactly what that noise is, but as I mentioned... it doesn't sound destructive and the motor seems to run great.

It's a toyota, drive it!

thats the kind of good news i was wanting to hear!! if i buy it ( more like when) il take it to my mechanic and se what he has to say about it. other then that the truck was in great shape, it was weaping a little oil, but 22re's are common for that with age

Im gonna have to say timing chain, guides, and tensioner have about had it. Under load the chain is tight on the load side, let off the throttle the chain floats on both sides. When the guides and tensioner wear out and the chain stretches you get that type noise.

So basically it could use with its routine maintenance? Still for 1900 Canadian gold coins that's not a bad deal.

Alright you guys, I have found the problem! Before I purchased the truck I figured I'd take it to my mechanic that I bought my truck off of. Turns out the berings in the motor were completely shot! And the motor could blow at anytime and needed a rebuild badly

I could be wrong but that noise did not sound at all like a crank bearing. Usually a crank bearing is a heavy knock sound. The noise your motor made was a very light fluttering noise when letting off the throttle.

It may have just sounded light an fluttery because of my cell phones video quality. But when shifting and accelerating you could hear the noise from inside quite clearly

The 22re is cheap to rebuild/replace. I would talk the seller down and throw a new motor in it. That is if the rest of the truck is nice enough.

Il see what the owner says. If I can get I for 500 or under il most likely do it. There is a rebuilt 22re on craigslist in Vancouver for 1350$ exactly. And will charge discount for installation
