235-85-16 Tires, who's running them?

Anyone running 235-85-16's? My 265-75's have dry rotted and I'm thinking about going narrower to save a bit of weight and I'm a fan of the look.

Thinking Firestone destination XT's.

Any feedback or photos of these on a classic runner would be appreciated!

I don't know if you are looking for a 1st or 2nd gen but here's mine:

235/85/R16 BFG All Terrain (with snowflake logo).

I loved them and would go even narrower, like 215. But i have to re-gear because i lost a lot of torque. My 2LT with 96hp wasn't happy with 31.7".

I have a 1st gen but this still helps. Honestly those don't look a ton narrower visually than my 265 75's. I don't see much around in the 215 size but would be interested if there were good options.

My 1st gen seems to turn the 265's ok but a re gear would help a lot especially on hill starts. I'm hoping the 13lb drop in rotational weight per wheel will help a little too. The firestones are pretty darn light.

I used to run 33x9.5x15's on my 1st gen and loved them. Had to step up to 10.5 width since the skinnies were discontinued.

I bought my truck with 1st gen Tundra steelies but I'd like to put some of those split 4 spoke alloys on. Only thing preventing me is like you said, no one makes tall skinny tires for 15's anymore at least not that I could find.

I ran the Falken AT3W in 235/85R16 a few years back. Don’t know if I have any other pictures of them right now, but this was on stock suspension with 1” lift blocks on the rear at the time. I was a big fan of the size!

Looks awesome. I have some longer shackles out back and the torsion bars dialed up a bit in the front. 267-75's clear just fine so hopefully these will too. I wasn't in too much of a rush but I might go ahead and get a deal on the president's day sale today.

Sorry to intrude with 3rd gen pics, but I've had 235/85 and 265/75 on my 3rd gen and I really like the 235/85s more. Lighter which mean better acceleration and braking (and fuel economy). I also like the look of the skinnies. The only advantage to the 265s IMO is you can take corners a lot faster.

When these KO2s wear out, I am probably going with 235 width General Grabber AT3s

Pulled the trigger on Firestone destination X/T’s in 235-85-16. If the factory specs are accurate, they should be a whopping 14lbs per corner lighter than my current BFG AT 265-75’s.

My BFG’s are not worn out but are over 10 years old so I can’t pass safety inspection. The tread is still surprisingly good.

Firestones aren’t as tough looking as the BFG’s but they are still and e rated tire

285/75x16's on both of my 4runners. Rear 1.5" spacers to remedy the spring sag in both truck, along with 1" crank on the torsion bars and Bilstein shocks. No rubbing or scrubbing on either truck, although I can't use the mud flaps with the first gen, as the bolts Toyota used interfered. It is close, but with the ifs it works.

The first gen has Kenda mud terrains, the same company that makes my mountain bike tires. They aren't as noisy as the BFG's and have worn like iron. I even cut the crap out of the tread on two of them on rocks/trail debris/whatever and haven't had a problem. My green '92 has Toyo Open Country CT's. Super tires, highly recommend them. Both tire choices are E load rated on new 16" stock Toyota 18-hole steel wheels.

Slightly better photos.

Here are some photos with better lighting. Still weighing my options with these. I love the size and even with the heavy hard top back on, the truck feels noticeably quicker with the lighter tires.

Though it used to be, this truck isn’t my daily. However, I still have to make trips to the mountains in it which are 2 hours on the highway. I’m considering switching for a more aggressive looking tire. Problem is pretty much all other tires in this side add a lot of weight to the firestones.

Gonna take a few more days to think it over.

One of the missing/incomplete items on the old girl. Not sure whether to save up for a custom bumper/carrier or order one of the $400 Trail Gear pre-runner rear set up.....and sorry for jacking your thread with my incorrect tire size.

Those actually look really good on that truck! I prefer the narrower tread and may even go 255/85x16 when the 285's wear out. What color are your 16" steelies? I have the 18 holes as well and that grayish color on yours looks really cool.

Thanks! They are just plasti dipped grey to match the grey softopper it never really runs. Was planning on getting them powder coated but the dip has held up so well I haven’t bothered yet.

The shadow under the bumper made it look like there was a really clean custom bumper under there.

I'm considering switching out to an SL or C rated tire for a little better ride quality. The off roading I do is typically muddy rutted fire road so I don't really need the beefy sidewall.

I might get Discount to quote me on a swap to these in a 265/75/16. Same weight as the 235-85-16 firestones and the Taco guys are all about them. Wish you could get 235's in a non E-load rating. Just too much for a truck as light as mine.
