On Christmas morning I left North heading for Twentynine Palms, California. It was me, my wife, my six year old, a great dane, a beagle and a 6 X 12 Uhaul trailer weighing in (loaded) at 5600 pounds. Took I-40 averaging about 65 mph for 10-12 hours a day on the road, including stops. I didn't track my fuel mileage but I suspect that I got about 11 mpg or so.
I was very impressed with how well the truck towed. The V8 is a jewel and it spun at around 3500 rpm for most of the trip. In the four days we went from 60 degree southern weather to 5 degrees in New Mexico and even up hills it didn't disappoint; the engine temp was steady the whole time.
Over the past six years we've moved three times each time towing around 5000 pounds. I've towed with my 78 Bronco (very well-built 400 cid motor) and with a 99 Expedition (weak 4.6L motor) and the 4Runner was my favorite by far. Ford's 4.6L motor doesn't hold a candle to to Toyota's 4.7L.
We've got 75,000 miles on the truck and I have no doubt that it'll go to 300,000 miles easily. If Toyota puts a small diesel in the next generation, I might have to go that route but until then I'm more than satisfied with this truck.
