265/70-->285/70 Lose power off the line?

I switch from my stock 20" tires to my 275 KO2 tires several times a year. There definitely is a difference. I notice the power difference the most when I put the stock lighter 20's back on. It just feels livelier. Also I gain 1.5 mpg. 285s would make the power lose and mpg slightly worse.

you could mitigate by reducing the net weight increase of the larger tires by getting lighter rims

the sprint booster won't make a difference, it just adjusts throttle response it doesn't add power

Yeah a lighter set of FN wheels can put you 8# to 9# pounds lighter than stock wheels

When I switched from the stock 20's to 265/70-17's I had the opposite experience because I used very light FN countersteer type-x wheels. I shaved almost 9lbs per corner and now have better acceleration from stoplights and maybe slightly higher city mpgs versus the stock 20" setup. I definitely lost .5 to 1mpg on the highway with the larger contact patch, though..

So I concur with jhguth and Akkording - light wheels can offset what the OP is experiencing.

I had a 2.5” lift installed with the stock size tires on and it made the tires look way too small. I spent a few months trying to convince myself it wasn’t that bad, but I finally just put 285s on and it looks perfect. I noticed the car felt a little more sluggish, but not enough to bother me and I love the bigger tires.

You went to the 275 due to the sluggishness issue ?

Thanks !

I changed from AT3's back to KO'2 mainly for durability, as I had 2 blown tires on the same trip.. to be fair, I am more of an extreme use case in terms of abuse.

went down to 275 mainly due to bad rubbing (285 + wheel spacers make it worse), plus a slight reduction in sluggishness.

After posting this question to google/AI, I got this response:

“how much torque would i lose if i change my tires from a 265 70 r17 to a 285 70 r17 on my 2018 toyota 4runner?“

Answer: loss of 3.5% torque.

That only accounts for the radius difference and resulting wheel torque/effective gear ratio.

It Does not account for losses due to vehicle mass, rolling hoop inertia, and rolling resistance changes.
