270-XP alternator problems or issues?

I'm considering getting a 270-XP high-output alternator. There was a group buy awhile ago. Has anyone had any issues or problems with this alternator? It will be great for charging a house battery fast (with a DC-DC charger), but I'm wondering if it has any compatibility issues with the 5th gen 4Runner.

Hi 4RExplorer,

Nope, Not one problem! I was the first one here (as far as I know) to install one on my 2012 LE, and it's been in since 2014! I also did "The BIG Three" cable conversion and installed a new AGM Odyssey EXTREME battery (900 CCA); Here's the thread that I started back then:

4Runner alternator upgrade (gen 5) 'Best to you',

Thanks, rig! 5 years and running without a problem is a solid recommendation. I want to do the Big Three upgrade as well.

Hi again 4RExplorer,

As far as the DC Power Engineering 270-XP alternator; 'Buy with Confidence'! One main thing that I love about the 270-XP, is that I never see a voltage sag, as in the factory unit!

I don't know if you read the thread I posted (above) yet, but I included many photos and wiring diagrams. You'll see a very consistent 14.12 (.12 100'ths) on the meter that I was using during the set-up/install, to test this alternator's capability!

It did not disappoint during any of the tests that were performed! As far as all of the ECU's (26 to be exact), they are designed to tolerate/operate on a variety of line voltages for their own protection, so... no worries! And you never need to rev the motor to maintain a steady battery charge because it'll output 200A at curbside idle.

And so your voltage will not sag because the alternator pulley ratio is set to turn at 3X, or 3-to-1X the crank shafts RPM! So if your idling@ 800 RPM (on the tach), the alternator is turning at 2,400 RPM; unlike most conventional Generators! Below is a tread on "The BIG Three"...how it works!

I hope it'll be helpful in your electrical endeavors!

The BIG three; how it works

'Happy Motoring',

I'm reading the thread(s) now! Lots of good info. For the purpose of ordering, the local Toyota dealer confirmed that the OEM alternator on my truck has a 4-pin connector, so the correct part number is 11517-270XP.
