275/55/20's on the Limited Wheel

With 45,000+ on the stock Yoko's I started shopping around. I read ALL the threads debating the safety of putting 275's on a 7" wheel, but I couldn't help but let my desire for a wider tire persuade me that it was going to be "OK". So, I set out to get some new shoes...and was flat denied by the tire shop. They apologized, but would not put 275's on a 7" wheel.

To be honest, I knew he was right. Sure, I could put 275's on, but it would be outside the design parameters of both the tire and wheel.
So, I priced a new set of Yoko Geolander 245/60/20's...nearly $300 a corner???:wtf: Geez, thanks Toyota.

I'm not a big fan of being forced into a poor value decision, so I hit up Craigslist and found a guy dumping the brand new wheels/tires off his '13 Trail. After a little negotiation, I scooped them up for about half of what the new Yoko's were going to cost me.

I can't say I am in love with stock Dunlops, but at least I will have a decent selection of rubber to choose from the next time I am in need of new tires.

the tire shop denied you for insurance reasons not because they are the authority on safety. Many people are running that size tire without issue.

Yeah, I know. To be clear, he wasn't claiming it was super dangerous or anything. He did go into a discussion about how the tire would be more prone to hydroplaning due to having a more rounded contact with the ground on a narrow wheel. ***His words, not mine***

It still pushed me over the edge to go another route. Full disclosure, I have a 16 month old, and it's easy for me to run the "worst case scenarios" in my head when safety is involved. I tend to err on the side of caution a lot more these days.

There are 275/55 options available that the manufacturer recommends for 7" widths. Not many choices at all, but they do exist.

I just put this size Michelin m/s 2 on my wife's 4runner. They look great and they aren't squirrelly or anything of that matter. Got a set of 4 from Kauffman for 930 OtD.

Ignoring the debate about the 275's on the 7" wheel. I think you made a great decision to get the TE rims. The variety of tire choices it opens up to you is well worth it, not to mention the improved off road performance you'll gain with the 17" rims.

I put 17" FJ wheels on my Limited. More tire choices and the tires run cheaper.
