275/80r17 MTR

I’m coming up on needing new tires, currently on 285/70r17 wildpeaks, but have been thinking of moving up to 275/80r17 Goodyear MTRs. I can get a really good deal on Goodyear tires so I’ll either be getting those or possibly duratracs in 285/70r17. I’ve been wanting to go a size up and the MTRs are light for 34s, more aggressive and relatively inexpensive compared to other options. I have a 2.5” lift, bmc and have cut a good portion of my bumper up front. I’ve seen threads on fitting 34s but they’re generally a 295 or 305 which makes them a decent amount wider than these 275s which leads me to believe most of the rubbing towards the rear of fender comes from width more so than height. Has anyone had any experience with this size? Am I better off sticking with the 285/70r17? Or even a 295/70r17?

First question somewhat off topic, are you not happy with the Falken's? They are available in all those sizes.


I haven't run the 275/80's but I have run a couple sets of 285/75's and 305's. I found there was more cutting necessary to fit the 285/75's vs 285/70's as well as more caster to keep them off of the body mount when compressed and fully turned. There was quite a bit more needed to fit the 305's.
All that being said the 275/80's are about 4/10th of an inch narrower than the 285's and that will help. What's your wheel offset?
Ultimately you'll have to see how much they rub on your rig and make adjustments. That being said I don't think it'll be too bad

I'm a fan of tall and skinny tires so I'll be interested to see how this goes for you. And weight savings is always a bonus so long as it doesn't sacrifice durability

Actually I’ve been really happy with the falkens, but as they go up in size they get pretty heavy and they’re also a bit more expensive than the Goodyears. I have a 25% discount for Goodyear which is the main reason I’m looking at the MTR and duratracs specifically. Right now I have FN Five Stars 17x8.5 -6 offset.
The MTR in the 275/80 are only 60lbs which is pretty light compared to other 34in tires which is a nice bonus on top of being less expensive than the other options.
If I decide to go for them I’ll post pics and update on rubbing issues.
