285 or 255, Hmm......

Hello all, first let me apologize for asking a question that has been asked many times before, but I'm having difficulty deciding what size tire to upgrade to.
Specs- 2007 T4R 4WD with 1.5/2.5 daystar lift, currently running factory size tires. Truck is used mostly for on-road driving, some highway commuting.

I know that as it sits now I could slap on a set of 255/75r17s and be on my merry way, but I love the aggressive look of 285/70r17s, but that would involve a good amount of trimming and cutting, yes?

So, question: Would I be better off going for 285/70r17s and cutting and trimming, or perhaps adding a bit more lift? If so, 5100s? FJ coils? Or should I just shut up and go for the 255s?

The way I look at is that tires are expensive and last a few years. If you have any throughts of going bigger on lift in the next year or so go with the 285's.

I initially had the cornfed 3/2 lift and ran the 285's without much issue. Sure they rubbed, but if you are not offroading at all you should be fine until you can upgrade to a coil over lift or what not.

I'd just hate to see you spend $1000+ on tires and regret it later. :guitar3:

Ya, that's kinda the way I'm thinking too. So not much rub on your setup? Were you running wheel spacers or aftermarket rims?

Forgot to add, I'm running stock rims and the truck is an SR5 so no XREAS.

im running 255's on mine and like the look. they were a nice size to get for me because i got them about 6 months before my lift and they dont rub
 
I have 285 Nittos. You have to trim and I still get some rubbing in reverse. They are heavier and you get worse gas mileage.

I love the look and off road a decent amount so i don't care but it's more work and money.
 
I have 265x70 Duratracs and will be going to the 255x75 Duratracs next year when it's time. I'd rather take the extra half inch in height and slightly improved MPG (due to skinnier) of the 255s over the 265s. But that's just me.

I went with the 255/75/17 and I am happy with my choice. They are 10 lbs a tire lighter than the wider tire, that will help a little bit on the mpg. I also like the fact the tires I am running are 32". Speed reads 4mph slower than your actual speed, so be aware of that.

Went with 255s as well. Love the feel on the trail and highway plus little height gained... Good luck with your choice..
 
Get 285's off the bat.

I purchased new 255's after a year later I sold them and bought 285's. I lost $500 with the switch. Just go 285's and be done with it!

Greatest con with 285's is that I lost around 2mpg going to 285's from 255's.

No rubbing here with 285's.
 
You could go for a p-rated 285 which is what I'll be doing with my next tires. I got 265s a little over two years ago before my lift, and now they look silly and I can't justify getting new tires when the ones I have are still at about 65%. The p-rated 285 cooper at3s are something like 12 lbs lighter than my e-rated 265 nitto terras, so I'm hoping I'll get some mpgs back.
 
Thanks for the help guys! At this point I'm leaning towards the 285s even though I do love the skinny 255s....

So I'd need at least a 3/2 lift to accommodate the new rubber even after trimming? I have no problem ditching the daystar, should I be looking at the cornfed 3/2, or should I skip a spacer lift and go with coils and shocks?

Input and advice is greatly appreciated!!
 
You're going to get a lot of "it depends" to that question. If you off road a good amount, you'll probably want to do it right with the coilovers. If it's just cosmetic and to fit the tires, spacers should be fine.
 
Honestly, it's 90% cosmetic. Most of my driving is is paved or gravel roads, but I LOVE the look of a lifted 4runner with some aggressive rubber.

Oh I'm not judging - I haven't been off road once - planning on it soon but I had some tire rubbing issues that held me up. It all depends on how much you want to spend too. And another thing to consider is how worn your stock suspension is. If you're going to need to replace it soon, might be worth the investment now.
 
The reason I have 265\70R17 (Nitto TG) is because they came with FJ Wheels I have purchased;

I like them, but 255\75R17 is definitely very tempting… it is just too bad there are not too many choices in that tire size… especially if you use Discount Tire;
 
I've got a set of 285 Cooper AT3's coming tomorrow to replace my 10k mile BFG's. I got them in P metric for a few reasons. The first being the realization that driving off road has little to no appeal to me. I only do it to get to mtb trails or climbing areas. The second is my 265 C load BFG AT's are 45lbs and have a 9" tread width. The P rated Cooper's are 45lbs and have an 8.94" tread width so I doubt I'll take an mpg hit. 95% of my driving is on the road so I'm happy to give up the sidewall strength of my BFG's.

And yes for someone who says they don't like to drive off road I know my 4Runner is a little over modified, but I like to be prepared for anything.

I have 255/75/17's from discount tire, cooper st maxx.
 
I have this predicament too. I have a set of 285/70/17 terra grapplers a buddy gave me sitting in storage but I really love my MTR's and I'm not sure it's worth the change for an extra like .3 inches since the terra's are pretty worn.
