285s and UCA rubbing

I just bought 285/70/17 Duratracs mounted on OEM 17x7.5 (+30 offset) wheels and they rub a little on left turn especially under acceleration. I suspect they rub on UCAs when truck leans and I can only slide two credit cards between front tire and UCA. Front is obviously not an obstacle because of CBI bumper and after I removed mud flaps there is a lot of clearance between front tire and body mount.

What should I do? Grid the UCA down for more clearance? (cheaper option, because I moving in 2 weeks), Order new wheels with close to 0 offset? (most expensive), get spacers which is least desired option.

You're immediate and most cost-effective fix would be to get Spidertrax spacers. Basically this nets you a - 2 offset.

You could try and pound in the lip of the UCA with a BFH a little. That isn't ideal but it would be somewhat better than grinding them down. What you really should do is get some SPC UCAs and do it right.
 
You could also pick up set of Trail/OR 5th gen wheels for $300-$500. Also look for FJ cruiser wheels- the steel wheels are a cheaper option. All of those wheels are -15mm offset and clear 285s fine. I’m running some OR wheels with KO2 285s and there is plenty of clearance.

Wheel spacers will get the tires off the UCA, but usually push the tires out too far and cause rubbing on the body mount or fenders. The Trail/OR/FJC wheels seem to put the tires in just the right spot.

The 5th gen Trail/OR are a +15 offset not negative. They give you an extra 10 offset from the stock 18" 4th gen wheels which are +25 offset. Can't speak for the 4th gen 17's though.
 
The rubbing on the UCA probably isn't that bad, you should see rub marks if it is actually rubbing, and even then it's not a huge issue. My brother has driven around on his rubbing the stickers and paint off for quite a while until he installed wheel spacers.

You’re right, +15 for the trail/OR/FJ wheels compared to the stock 17” wheels are +30mm. So those stick out 15mm more than stock.
 
There are 1/4" spacers that work on the cheap.

Watch that body seam too. Can cut the tires when compressed, fold it over with a couple/3 vise-grip pliers and hammer it flat...runs up under the liners.


Just do the body mount chop.


The LR/SPC UCA in the last pic will give you more tire to UCA room as you can adjust the upper ball joint, unlike most UCA's.

I was going to spread my lift, tires, and wheels purchases out so it wouldn’t hurt the wallet as much so I got the lift first, tires during Labor Day and wheels would be next month. Mine were rubbing so badly that I couldn’t turn my wheel beyond 180*. I couldn’t park my car into a parking spot without doing a 3 point turn. Then last week I had to make a sharp turn and it lurched forward and I heard some loud noises. I said I needed to get new wheels ASAP.

I drove to get new wheels and when they lifted up the truck to do an alignment the guy called me and told me that a bolt had come completely off and I was riding on just 1 bolt.

Rubbing the UCA doesn't cause the lower ball joint bracket bolt to come out lol. Who installed your lift? Those bolts always get red loctite and torqued to 225 Nm.

Rubbing is one thing but when I made that sharp turn the car felt like it was rolling over a curb, made a noise, and from that point on the alignment on it was off and it was pulling right. I can only conclude that was what did it.

I agree, the bolt would have been sheared instead of simply unthreaded.

I highly suspect the tire would fail before that bolt does when properly torqued with red locktite per FSM. OP, if that tire did in fact manage to pop that bolt out, threads should be heavily damaged in the hole. I suspect the threads are undamaged and a replacement bolt goes right in.
 
If that bolt isn't broken, which I highly doubt it was, whoever installed your lift left that bolt loose, it's that simple. Those are fine thread very heavy bolts that should be installed with red Loctite and torqued properly to I believe 118 foot pounds. I'd find a new installer or pay more attention to detail if you did it yourself. Would likely be a good idea to go over the rest of your suspension and make sure it's all tight after finding this failure.
 
If it makes you feel any better. I've done this very thing. Although I'm so anal about the noises my car makes I picked up a noise before I lost the bolt. I thought it was a break caliper andhere BOTH of my bolts were loose. Scary stuff.
