2gen 2.4 l gasoline interference engine

I was wondering if my engine is an inteference engine. Type: 2.4 L 22R-E I4 from 1991.

Hi Peter - yes, it's an interference engine. And I saw your other thread - if your chain was broken, you'd know it, there'd be no "think" about it . What's your truck doing?

Well, I just started my engine and drove away when it died instantly. Tried to restart it, but got the dzzzzz noise (no compression). So I figured, timer chain broken. Pushed it aside the road and had it towed of. Of course I am worried one or more valves are bend, if not worse.

If it's spinning faster than normal when you crank it, yeah, that could easily be a broken chain. Breaking is better than skipping a tooth, in terms of whether or not your valves and pistons were damaged, but I'd pull and service the head anyway just to be sure.

It's very easy to get to the top of the timing chain - label and disconnect all the vacuum hoses that run into or over the valve cover (and a couple wires), then remove 4 bolts and pull the valve cover off. The timing chain should be right there in the front. If it isn't, or if it's loose on the cam sprocket, then you've got a broken chain.

Before you pull the head I would do a couple external checks first. Pull the valve cover and verify your mechanical timing is still good. Then do a compression test. Even if you're not able to start your engine and warm it up first, a cold compression test will still let you know if you at least have compression. If you don't have compression then I would pull the head. If you do have compression and your mechanical timing is good, then you need to do a leakdown test. That will let you know if your cylinders are holding pressure which could tell you if the valves in your head are good. Try and to as much testing before you take the engine apart so you know more of what to look for while you're tearing it down.

What is the recommended mileage to replace the timing chain, sprocket, tensioner, metal guides, etc?

I took a look at Ebay and there are several kit options. Do you know of one in particular that is all OEM or mostly recommended from guys in this 2nd gen forum? For example, for 3rd gens, there is a vendor recommended by users on the 3rd gen forum (aircabin) that has all OEM parts on his kit.

Get a kit that has steel guides. Quieter and much stronger.

I forget the mileage interval, 90k? It's in the FSM.

Thank you KidVermicious. Would you recommend any brand? I´d rather use OEM but I don't seem to find anyone stating their kit is OEM on the ones I saw on Ebay.

That store you mentioned also don't say so.

OEM gets fuzzy on these old trucks. Engnbldr has been building race-spec 22RE engines and selling parts to the Toyota crowd for longer than some of us have been alive, and you won't hear a single bad word said about him or the stuff he sells. I don't think you can't go wrong spending your money with him.
