Why do some 4runners have the 2H 4H and 4L......And some just have the 4H and 4L.....Are there differences are positives to these models?

Some 4runners, such as 4th gen. V8 4WD and 5th gen Limitied, have full-time 4WD. These Models will have a 4h and 4lo. The torsen open center differential in the full-time models allows the front and rear axels to turn at different speeds so the 4WD system will not bind when on high-traction surfaces like pavement. These models also have a locking center differential that will cause front and rear to turn at the same speed for more traction on slippery surfaces.

The 4th gen. V6 4WD models have a 2WD mode, along with a 4hi/ 4lo. They also have a torsen center diff with locking feature like the V8 models.

The new 5th gen SR-5 and TE have a 2WD mode and a 4hi/ 4lo. The center differential is always locked on these models, so both axels turn at the same rate. The 4WD system in these models should not be used on high-traction surfaces.
