2JZ-GE anyone

So i've been thinking about horsepower recently, or rather lack thereof, and was considering upgrade options. Cost being a factor, URD supercharger is pretty sweet, but a $4000 25% power increase. The 250HP 1GR-FE was considered, but expense once again gets in the way. I saw a couple old threads about a 2JZ swap, but no real useful information about fitment, anyone else considered it? a used rear sump VVT-i motor with harness is about $1400, and spec is roughly 235HP, but the same amount of torque as the 5VZ. I like the 5VZ, but I need more power, actual power that re-gearing won't provide. And yes, I've seen the 2UZ swaps, possibly my favorite engine, although the 3UR is top 3, not interested in doing that just yet, perhaps if I turn my ride into a rock crawler or something.

The 1uz is probably the easiest swap and will give similar output of the 2j. Why consider one but not the other?

You would want a FRONT sump 2jz if you are doing that swap. Also, you will need a 2jz bellhousing for the trans, at the very least. Depending on ECU, you may need to do a hybrid transmission to keep 4WD. Engine position will change, moving the transmission, requiring new driveshafts. The 2jz never came in a truck application, so you will either need to stick the ECU in the engine bay or re-wire the whole motor to run the wiring inside.

Doesn't seem like enough trouble for just a 2jz-ge. All-in, a supercharger will get you more torque and a little less power (better truck torque curve) for about the same total cost. That's for just the supercharger (no need for tuning, 7th injector, etc.). If you want more power, you can add parts from there. No way to cheaply add more power with a non-turbo 2jz.

Now if you really want to go hog-wild... a 2jz-gte will get you where you really want to be. Then it might actually be worth all the extra work! Same story with the 1UZ/2UZ.

What is your end goal when it comes to more power? And how much is time/energy worth to you? For pure ease, you can't get anything easier than the SC. And you can find them new for under $3k.

I agree that there are no real cheap power options for the 2JZ-GE--cams, headers, and a good tune will be decent, but you are then looking at peak power around 7k or higher with about the same lower-end torque as a tuned 5vz.

Honestly, Id go Supercharger or buy a cheap tuner car for the time and money you'll spend to make a 4,000+lb 4runner decently quick.

I hate to be a stick in the mud.

Seeing that the idea of cost consciousness is being thrown around, I don't think a swap is for you. In a previous truck, I did one of the cheapest EFI-engine'd swaps known to man when my original engine gave up the ghost, spent about $1500 for everything (donor vehicle, parts, tools, and hired help), had a dead truck for months, and was never able to work out the quirks when we were done. And in the end I was not allowed to get an emissions test because the local State Referee was a stickler. Not to mention that you will have to figure out unique solutions for when things just don't match, and if you don't have a decent electrical background it will be much harder.

Gears solve [almost] everything. You may not be able to drive at highway speeds with really short gears, but I don't see why a 5VZ wouldn't give you enough power for a crawler unless you're racing in the King of Hammers and stuff. Had a buddy running an even weaker 2.9L Cologne in his Ranger crawler and he could keep up with the V8 swapped Jeeps on any trail.

C5 Corvettes are cheap if you just wanna go fast.

Well said!

I would second gears, also.
