I had started a thread last year about supercharger vs. turbo and realized pretty quick a turbo is completely off the table.
Now onto my new questions in regard to superchargers. I know about the URD kit and it does look good given that it includes everything you would need. My question though is in regard to the Magnuson kit made for the 1GR-FE 2005-2015 Tacoma's.
The reason I am looking at both of these kits is that each has their own benefits.
The Pros:
The URD is specifically made for our 4th gen's and includes everything
Would bump the horsepower up significantly over stock
Cons:
Is much more involved than the magnuson kit
Is Nearly 6K which is a lot of money
Magnuson Pros:
Still bumps horsepower up a lot and includes everything
Seems to be a much more DIY friendly install as there are less parts to replace
Has the supercharger whine that is amazing
The torque curve looks more enticing as it seems to reach peak torque sooner than the URD kit
Cons:
Is made for the tacoma not the 4runner
Still at the end of the day is expensive
My biggest question here is does anyone know if the Magnuson kit would even work? I've done research and it seems like both engines are the vvti type and have the exact same horsepower/torque numbers.
The issue that I see though is that the peak torque comes in sooner at about 3800 RPM as apposed to 4000 RPM on the tacoma. The other thing I saw was that the compression ratio is different but I dont know what the numbers mean technically speaking.
the 4Runner has a compression ratio of 10:1 while the tacoma has a compression ratio of 9:6:1
Could this be resolved with some slight tuning for the OBDII map that they send you? On their site it says they also have a tuner kit available.
Any help would be greatly appreciated before I contact then.
