2nd Gas Tank or Fuel Cell?

There have been a few tanks kludged onto 4Rs from what I read. Some use the spare tire position if I recall correctly. Or just had jerry cans on a rack.

I wonder if there is room to expand the OEM tank? By that I mean-
Remove factory tank. Have a custom tank made to fit in the same area that has more capacity. Might be able to make it so it uses the OEM filler and pump. No fooling around with transfer pumps and such. I have never dropped my tank so I have no idea if there is room to add 5(the amount extra I would want to start making me think it was worth the effort) or more gallons of capacity by fabricating a tank that used any extra space in the original location.

I'm new to my 3rd gen 4Runner and that 18gal tank was a surprise after having 32gal in the pickup

There are a few very good threads on swapping in a F150 tank. It tucks in between the frame rails behind the rear axle nicely. However, I think it's only 20gal and the ones I've seen all do it to replace the stock tank which is prone to trail damage. So it's not for range.

The overlanders all seem to be using jerry cans and / or rotopax for extended range.

All that said, the absolute best way to extend range is to make sure your engine is running tip top, your tires are properly inflated for the terrain you're on, and to simply ease off the skinny pedal. I have a huge problem with that last one.

This topic has been covered so many times it's not even funny.

Search around.

I was working on one that was 35 gal, but life got in the way and it's been put on hold.
