2nd gen aftermaket parts

I've been looking around and I can't seem to find a website that has a decent inventory of 2nd gen parts. I probably missed something but can anyone point me in the direction of a reliable source for aftermarket parts?

Also somewhere that has a good variety of product. I'm thinking about a grill guard and new skid plate a roof rack. Things like that you know? Aesthetic things haha

As far as I know there really isn't a site that carries a huge inventory of specific 2nd gen gear. But there are a number of fabricators that sell bits and pieces of custom parts you may be interested in.

A grille guard carries the common name "damage multiplier" you may want to look into that.

Most skid plates that I know of are a part of a bumper/skid system, but you can probably find one if you do the looking.

2nd gens do not have near the options for aftermarket accessories compared to 1st and 3rd gens. I personally would not get a grille guard, I would replace the bumper with something more sturdy. Trail gear, marlin crawler, and budbuilt are some decent places to start looking.

Yeah I looked into a lot of the grille guard stats and reviews. I'm definitely second guessing my thoughts on getting one haha. Has anyone found a good roof rack for their second gen? Mine didn't come with a factory one so from what I understand that again is going to limit my options.

BTW, I have a bored and polished throttle body for the 3.0 with a newish TPS. I recall it being bored a 61.45mm or around there.
I want to sell it. Does anyone know what they are worth?

If I remember right, a site called prolineracks.com was REALLY helpful when I was looking to do a rack conversion on my 2nd gen Frontier awhile back. They are pretty reasonable in price, just call them up and explain to them what you're looking for

Welcome to the world of the 2nd Gen, where hardly anyone carries stuff made for that model. I've had three of them, and I can attest that most listings start with '96 and go up from there. There are hardcore parts available through places previously mentioned such as Trail-Gear and Marlin Crawler, as well as Northwest Offroad, Low Range Offroad, Rocky-Road, etc.. For more mainstream parts, there just isn't much out there.

Has anyone found a good roof rack for their second gen? Mine didn't come with a factory one so from what I understand that again is going to limit my options.

My roof rack is made by rola, no complaints about it. I welded some light tabs on the front.

You are correct--the problem is only so many companies offer a railing system that attaches to the truck's roof. Most racks just attach to your factory set-up (which isn't that great, by the way--it's only rated for 100 lbs). Surco is one that comes to mind off the top of my head that offers everything, from railing kits to a full line of accessories. I've never owned one, though, so I can't vouch for their quality personally.

I had a Grille Guard on my 96 Toyota Pickup and it saved my truck from being totaled when I hit a tree out wheeling. It did its job and absorbed the force from the tree instead of pushing my engine into the cab. It bent into the radiator but without it I really do feel I would have wrapped the truck.

As far as the roof rack I was in the same boat. I had no factory mounts. I ended up going with Yakima Q towers and the load warrior.






It sits forward which I am not a fan of, but it is there and usable. The guy explained to me that the weight ratings are usually more than listed because the listed ratings have more to do with the DOT’s theory on what weight things become a dangerous projectile in a collision. I’m not sure I buy that but its possible.

That being said, I toyed around with swapping mine for a while with a first gen, but I am glad I didn’t. I like my 2nd gen, it’s the first 4runner I wanted growing up for whatever reason and now I have it. Parts are hard to find but not impossible. Also lots of parts are customizable. It may take more work but it can be done.
