2nd Gen rear bumpers...

So I don't run into too many 2nd Gen on the road with me. But whenever I'd see another out and about, I'd be like "Hey.. that looks pretty cool...what's different about it?" I couldn't ever figure it out until now, (makes me look like an idiot but whatever) the rear bumpers are gone! Why is it so common to do that? Is it because the rear is already so big? Compared to the narrow front, the rear of the 4Runner really does look like a big ol' booty. I do like the extra protection, though. Does anybody do a simple metal bar along the back instead of the rear bumper? :zoom:

There are quite a few to choose from for the old runners.

Here is my personal favorite (Other than custom, but we are all biased to our own stuff right?):

A quick google search will bring up a whole plethora of bumpers and guards for whatever year you are looking for. Use year to search though not generation. (Sometimes not all 2nd gen bumpers work for all 2n gens etc. etc.)

Edit: There is a drop down menu to select the 1990 to 1995 bumper on that link. Don't accidentally get a 1st gen bumper!

Yeah, especially at stock or slightly lifted heights, that stock bumper on that fat butt will hang up on things pretty easily. Accessories for the 2nd Gen are tough to come by sometimes. There are a number of tube style rear bumpers out there, but good luck finding one of the plate styles, especially if you want a spare carrier on it. Slim pickings. By the way, I've had three of them myself, so I'm used to researching them. What kind of lift are you planning?

From what I've seen the thin metal on the 2nd gen rear bumpers rust through and its easier to just take the whole thing.off lol.

They do rust. Mine has rusted through on both sides. Im planning to build my own rear bumper. That way i can start building the rear exo and tie it all into my rock sliders. I dont want to crush my rear quarters since my body is still real straight.

A proper lift kit will take care of the butt sag for you. I would recommend Old Man Emu for a moderate size high quality lift. For a simple tube bumper, guys like All Pro Offroad, Trail-Gear, or others can hook you up with good stuff.

OME = Bullet Proof Quality. Wish I had gone that way. I won't make the same mistake with my 96 Land Cruiser.

It's all about the quality. OME is solid stuff, with lots of R&D to make sure their components complement the size and weight of our smaller rigs. Besides, 5" is pretty tall for such narrow trucks, unless it's a soft-spring solid axle conversion that gives really well--that tall with IFS will roll you right over.

I've heard OME is a great brand. I know a guy who put OME on his Land Cruiser a while back. Says they're still holding up under the abuse.

I have a procomp 4". It's mostly drop brackets and taller springs for the rear, but it rides real nice and its super strong.

Old thread revival. No Hair, do you have any pictures of the side of the bumper using the old sides? How is this bumper working out for you?

As far as the OP I have been doing some searching and found that coastal armour, 4x innovations, 4x4labs are some of my favorites. TG and Allpro are great products but I am not a huge fan of the tube bumpers because they expose so much of the rear quarters and seeing the body lines change is not to my taste.

Anyone have any pictures?
