2nd gen speaker sizes

hey guys, my name is mike and this is my first post!!!!

i recently bought a 1990 4runner, v6 5 spd, had a blown hg (of course), so i pulled the motor and im in the process of fully rebuilding it.

but while the motor is out i decided i would put some tlc into the rest of the runner too, its getting a new paint job as well as new stereo system!! i already have a jvc deck for it and 2 pioneer 12s" powered by a 1000 watt kenwood amp, now i need to order my speakers, the only problem is the old owner removed all the old speakers for some odd reason.

so my question for you guys is what size speakers will i need for my runner?

Welcome to the site! The stock front speaker sizes are 4" and the rear stock size is an awkward 5". The fronts are in a bad spot to project sound and I would recommend installing a 5 1/4" coax, or a 5 1/4" component, in the front door if possible. The rear offers plenty of room for going bigger and since you will not find a 5" replacement, you really don't have a choice as far as changing size. I would recommend a 6 1/2" or a 6x9 for the rears. I had 5 1/4s in the rear and 4s in the front for my old '90 and had very good sound, but they were also high end speakers.

Rear speaker question

How did you mount the rears? Just in the panel or did you build a box to bolt to the fender well?

I already answered your pm but I wanted to follow up here too. I mounted them in the factory speaker location behind the rear panels. I used the mounting clips that came with the speakers to mount them to the interior sheet metal. I couldn't attach all 4 sides but still got it to secure well without any special fabrication.
