My 91 sits a little tall for my liking (Hard for a fat boy to get in).

4" in the front, and in my opinion to tall. I am running chevy 63" springs in the back with a lift block to match the front. Plan on lowering a couple inches soon.

How big of blocks? I was thinking chevys. I want to leaf mine soon but the trail gear ones are $$ for me this time of year.

Hey everyone, just thought I'd introduce myself and throw up a few pics of my 1990 4x4 5 speed manual 4 Runner that I'm buying on Sunday! It has the 3.slow V6 with a recent head gasket replacement, timing belt replacement, oil change, new radiator, and new tires. It is in fantastic condition! It only has two small spots of surface rust and a tear in the drivers seat, but other than that it is perfect. Everything seems to work so far (A/C, power antenna, all 5 windows roll down, cruise control, etc), which I think is pretty impressive for a 24 year old car... It was only $3k, which in my opinion is a steal for a 4 Runner in this condition.

I'm transferring over from a 1999.5 VW Golf TDI and a Porsche 944. I was looking for something with 4 wheel drive for the winter (the Golf SUCKED!) and I wanted something a little bigger for hauling my buddies around or when I go on trips to the beach. I'm gonna dump my VW (problems since day 1...) and keep the 944 for the summer time.

Anyways, here's a few pics:

I've test driven it a few times and it was much different than the small cars that I'm used to, but I'll get the hang of it. When the head gasket was replaced the mechanic didn't touch the plugs, wires, distributor, or air filter, so I think I'll give it a good tune up after my bank account recovers... The previous owner has no idea what kind of oil the mechanic put in, so I think I'll read up on the engine and change the oil again so I know what's in there. The previous owner claims that it'll need a shock replacement soon too, so I'd better save up for that as well...

Welcome! The 4runner looks to be in damn nice shape. What have you done to the 944? My friend has one he just rebuilt. Unfortunately the day he got it running real nice, some A-hole ran a red light and T-boned him. Totaled the Porsche and to make it worse, the guy that hit him took off.

So far I've done a top end rebuild/head gasket replacement, oil cooler seal replacement, front engine seal replacement, timing/balance shaft/power steering/alternator belt replacement, new water pump, new belt tensioners/rollers, rebuilt the brake calipers, new rotors/pads/fluid, SS braided brake lines, new fuel hoses, new fuel pressure regulator/damper, new wheels/tires, new coolant hoses, new thermostat, new thermo fan switch, new battery, converted from an AFM to a MAF, new vacuum lines, rebuilt the throttle body, new throttle position sensor, new speakers, cleaned all the grounds I could find, new cap/rotor/plugs/wires, new air filter, new sunroof gears, new hatch pins/seats, new shift knob cap, new power steering reservoir/fluid/hoses, oil change, and an unfortunate brake failure led to some front end damage, so I decided to throw on a turbo front end.

It's currently undergoing a full interior replacement (new carpet, seats/dash recovered, etc), A/C system overhaul, and transmission/axle replacement. I still have to go over the steering/suspension and do lots of body work. This car is a money pit...

Hopefully I'll have it back on the road by summer time and my new 4 Runner will get me through the winter.

Just got a message from the previous owner and it looks like he won't be dropping off my 4 Runner until Sunday night instead of Sunday morning :cry2:

NoCal '94 4Runner with 90,000 miles, under $7000 - Bittersweet tale

:happens: Hey everyone, another FNG here with a bittersweet tale for potential buyers. And when I mean new, I mean new, this is my first vehicle and I'm almost 50! I found a '94 Runner with 89,900 miles for $6900 in fantastic condition in the SF Bay area, which I thought was pretty good. It had been garage stored, two previous owners and what I thought were only minor problems. Thanks to this amazing forum I was able to replace all the speakers (totally blown of course), replace radio antenna, replace taillights, and order replacement alarm fob. You guys are the best, I just wish I had read a little more thoroughly before I bought it....

Everything was so far, so good. I did three camping trips the first month; Pt. Reyes, Desolation Wilderness, and Mendocino, putting about 1100 miles on the truck. I was totally in love with the Runner, other 2nd Gen. drivers honk and wave, felt like part of the club! The day after Mendo trip, I noticed the coolant gauge wasn't registering any change when I drove to the store, and conked out at a couple stops. Uh oh, even though I'm a newbie driver, I knew something was up. Sure enough, the radiator and reservoir were bone dry, so flushed it with water and noticed a lot of rust. Not good! Went home, flushed radiator until it ran clean and went to get coolant to refill. Stopped at the mechanic on the way home, said he'd check it, but suspected blown head gasket(s). Bingo! By the time I'd walked home he called, definitely emissions sucking back into the radiator, evidence of blown gasket.

So my $6900 cherry became a +$3500 head gaskets (both), water pump, timing belt, idler pulley, hoses, etc., etc. job. Turns out one of the previous genius owner had used water instead of coolant in the radiator!

Long story short, I didn't know about the chronic head gasket problem on 2nd gen Runners until after I searched the threads. Unfortunately, according to the dealer in my area, the gasket recall work had been done in '98 (with about 25,000 miles on it!). Had the previous owner taken care of the vehicle, I would be a lot happier. UP SIDE: I should be good for another 150,000+ miles to go! And I still LOVE IT!!

Thanks for listening to my rant, and thanks for the great forum!

2nd Gen 4Runner 3.0, 112k miles with new head gaskets, picked it up for $700. We didn't need it but just couldn't walk away for that kind of money!

If those are 31" tires, turn those torsion bars down and buy my lift.
