2nd gen underneath spare tire carrier

So I went to my local Jalopy Jungle and picked up the parts to fix my spare tire carrier. The cable on my 1994 had evidently snapped and it didn't have the bracket and spring when I bought the rig. As I replaced the parts, it dawned on me that if the cable was to break again, there is nothing holding the tire up! Am I missing something or is this all there is holding the spare tire? Rod

That’s exactly what can happen. The tire can drop if the cable or chain breaks. You should inspect the undercarriage spare relatively often checking the condition of the hoist and tire. I just installed new trailer harness wiring and took the opportunity to inspect the spare. I found a piece of metal strap the PO had welded on to mount an exhaust, was damn near about to puncture it.

Thanks for the info. I saw some extra bolt holes that maybe I can utilize and make a safety strap or bracket as a "just in case". Thanks again.
