2nd gen V6 3.0 4Runner RPM bump and cold start issue. Help!

I have a 90 4Runner with a 95 3.0 V6 that was put in by previous owner at the beginning of the year. I got it smelling like gas so I didn't run it until I changed the fuel injector seals (all 6 were either worn, rock hard, cracked, or missing). Doesn't smell like gas now, so I started it up and drove around a bit and have noticed a few issues.
First off, when it idles there is an intermittent 500rpm bump (sometimes 2 or 3 in a row) for about half a second, then drops back down. When driving it does the same thing but the bump lasts about a second and a half before dropping back down. There is also some intermittent pinging or clicking, but I don't know if that's related.
Second, it's hard to start in the mornings. I cleaned the exterior of the cold start injector (was pretty filthy) and there is gas pressure at the line that connects to it. So maybe it's the switch? Or maybe I need to clean the inside of it by somehow running some cleaner through it?
The check engine light is on, I haven't had a chance to scan it yet but previous owner says it's a knock sensor code. I have reset it by unplugging the battery, but it comes right back up immediately.
Anyway if anyone has any solutions or ideas about any of these things, please let me know. I drove the truck about 60 miles yesterday, but am skeptical about driving it again till I get to the bottom of what's going on. Thanks!

I'd start by checking the timing and the function of the TPS. I had similar issues and made them go away when I adjusted the timing from the 18+ degrees back to 10. I also posted about my TPS adjustment. I still have a high idle issue that appears to be temp sensor related but not related to surging idle any more.

I have messed with the timing screw several times because sometimes I start the truck and the idle is too high, other times it's too low. It seems like every time I start it it's at a different idle between 500 and 1500 RPM. How do I adjust the TPS?

Figured it out!

Ran the codes and got 22: coolant temp sensor. Checked it out and saw a broken wire. Fixed it, now no problems. Whew! Free and simple.

I think the timing screw you are referring to is the idle adjusting screw.
You can get a good TPS adjustment write up on the forum with a quick search. It's also in the Haynes Manual. Timing is set by using a timing light and rotating the distributor. Don't mess with the timing if you don't have a timing light.
