2WD and 4WD Rear end the same?

Wifes high miler 2WD has been leaking oil from both sides for a while. Fed up changing axle seals and bearings etc. only for it start leaking again within weeks of repair. Concluded that the rear end is worn or bent axles. Whatever, I can pick up a rear end of a 4WD from a newer 3rd gen cheap and wondered if the rear ends are the same??

Yup. 1996 to 2002 4Runner axle housing are identical, unless it's got a locker.

Might be slightly different, but should work. Some have ABS, some do not. You can look at the axle housing ends and see if there is a plug in for ABS sensor. Gearing may be different axle to axle, but that shouldn't be an issue if you swap the gears.

Good points but yes they both have ABS and according to the VINs both are 4.1 gears but will count the teeth to be sure.

The gears shouldn't even matter though. Being 2WD it doesn't matter which you get because you don't have a front diff to match it.

This thread is like 5 years old and 3rd gens only go up to 2002 so we probably will be no help, better to post in 4th gen section.
