2wd Offroading Help

Hey guys I feel I have made my 2wd pretty capable for off road now I just need to make myself be able to be capable to offroad with 2wd because I really am pretty clueless when it comes to no what to do..:shrug:

I have an 08 2wd so I have the traction control switch. So if I am offroading would I want to go with standard traction mode or should I push it to where it the traction control light comes on and the auto lsd light comes on, or should I hold it down to where the vsc off lights up and the traction control light lights up.

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone would like to let me know how to use and when to use a rear air locker on a 2wd that would be great.

My points of advice are:

1) Don't be an idiot, there are some things your truck just wont be able to handle that a 4WD truck can,

2) Pick your line carefully,

3) Constant momentum is very likely your friend.


I have a 2WD also, but I don't really take it offroad except on a very rare occasion I need to run it up a rough logging road, but nothing too ridiculous. The big drawback of the 2WD 4Runner for me was the lack of the TRD-mainstay of the rear e-locker. I wish they would have made it an option at least (I think they did briefly with one year of 4th gen?)

A 2WD truck with a locked rear axle actually isn't half bad offroad, as long as you're not in some really sticky mud or trying to rock crawl it. The "LSD" mode in the 4th gen is sort of a cheat-mode -- it doesn't really lock the rear axle as far as I know, it just does some trickery with braking to maintain traction.

I'm betting it would be best to leave it off unless you come to rest in something that's pretty loose or sticky, then engage it. My $0.02.

umm i used to wheel my 2wd all the time when it was stock and havent gotten to lately after all the mods but id say ya to just try it slowly but just make sure ur not doing anything to large boulders that are close together. Other then that, DONT go alone... make sure there is someone with a 4wd truck or a winch to help get u out incase.

You would be surprised what a 2wd can do, Aside from mud and sand I have done many trails in 2wd. I always just leave my 4wd off untill I need it to turn it on and I have yet to be forced to turn it on. I like knowing that I have the 4wd to get me out, but I like to run in 2wd to get an idea of what "most" trucks are capable of, and I have found that a 2wd can get you very far especially with the lockers available to you, as mine is open ended im sure you can do even more in 2wd ! Biggest issue with going offroad to me is clearance !

Thanks guys but what I really wanted to know with the questions is about the traction button for the 08' plus models. TaxGuy you out there?
