I am planing on installing a supercharger on my 2000 4runner this summer. my 4runner has 65000 miles on it. is it to late to install a supercharger on my truck? if not when is it to late to install one? I have not taken into account driving habits because each person is different. just basing my question on a mileage stand point.

Lol. No way. People have put on superchargers with well over 115,000 on their engines. Are you going to do the fuel upgrades?
 
I will do the Toyota Truck Supercharger Fuel Upgrade Kit - 3.4L 5VZ-FE when I install the super charger.

with 140k on your engine, doing FI without proper fuel and transmission upgrades will cause your motor to die very quickly.

if you do plan to SC, get a compression test done and leak down test, and start saving for a new motor.

for serious? It's that rough on the motor huh? I mean my truck runs phenominally, no leaks, smoke, insanely smooth idle, trans shifts perfectly...

is it really that bad for the motor?

well yes and no, do you have the fuel upgrades required for the SC? do you have your tranny valve body upgraded? have you had your engine compression checked lately? how good of care do you take of your motor? without the extra upgrades, i wouldnt run one on my DD 4runner, unless it had like 60k miles and i had a 100k mile warranty! generally speaking supercharging an aging motor is not a good idea, as it introduces forces that its not use to, which can in extreme situations, cause complete failure. now if you wanted to do it RIGHT, and you just HAD TO HAVE a SC, get the fuel upgrades from URD (around 1k) the tranny upgrade from ITP (around 750) and wait until your current motor dies and then when its rebuilt strap a SC on it then.

now, CAN you run a SC without the upgrades, of course, is it smart? probably not.

and its not HORRIBLE for the engine... a brand new engine that is. remember TRD use to be an independent company before toyota bought them up.
 
I put my Supercharger on at 70K miles. I just turned 160K yesterday. I have had no problems whatsoever. I use it to tow my race car trailer on weekends and my boat. Before the Supercharger I had trouble getting to 60mph with the boat on the back. Now, I have to remember the trailer is there or the braking gets a little hinky...
I didn't know anything about any fuel kit or transmission kit and as I said, I have had no problems whatsoever...

Having said that, I must add - your situation may vary. Adding boost to any engine - even a new one can result in shortened engine life.

I'll be the first to say *search* Your truck is just getting broken in... I sank my 98 at 70k and at 140 I slapped an S/C on it and it ran without a hitch (see link below). As for the trans my current truck has over 130,000 s/c'd miles on the original trans without any upgrades. The previous owner and I both are sensitive to this fact that its not upgraded but all you have to do is not beat on it every day and you should be fine. If your ever going to romp on it, use the shifter. It locks up the TC earlier and helps with this. Like any modded vehicle you just can't beat the life out of it. I wouldn't hesitate in the slightest. Though what has been said about the fuel mods is also correct (see link below).

I knew there had to be someone out there that believes in these toyotas...I mean the most beating on my engine i do is either trying to climb an overpass (which takes alot of work with the 285/70 MT's) or getting the kickdown to pass someone on the expressway. It's a 4runner, i mean i'm not taking it out on race night and rollin with the 240's.

I have a tranny cooler installed, the fuel upgrades sound a little pricey, anyone know a cheaper alternative to richen up the mixture? how about like the Apex'i SAFC-II? i had one on my rx-7 and it was great! or even cheaper, a resistor inline with the MAF?

i just want enough power to be able to turn the giant tires and maybe offset the shitty gas mileage im getting due to all the extra weight
 
i bought my '00 4runner from a friend with about 120k milies. i was hesitant to slap on a sc this late in the game but i'm soo glad i did it. also bought a urd 7th injector kit which stopped most of the high gear/low rev pinging and also bought a urd 2.2 pulley (which made a huge difference). this is my dd and i ride this bad boy hard. hearing the supercharger spool up when you throttle hard is like music to my ears. no engine problems to date. i have a 5-speed so can't comment about the tranny.
