3.5 mm/ Bluetooth Interface for Stock Stereo

I drive my 4runner ~3 months out of the year (winter) or to haul stuff, go hunting etc... Basically I don't really want to stick much $ into it besides maintenance repairs.

That being said, I wouldnt mind having my phone connected to the stereo so I can listed to some music. I was hoping someone had figured out a way to rig up a 3.5mm connection to the stock head unit however I didn't really see a thread for it. Likewise, I'd consider dropping a little extra for bluetooth but again most seach hits are related to aftermarket stereos.

I tried searching some places on the internet and found an adapter that connects to the Changer Port on the back of the Radio:

The reviews were either it's great or it didn't work. Tough call.
 
my sister in law bought an older KIA i think an 09 it has a cd player and radio but she wanted to do the same so I went on amazon and found a radio adapter that has everything you need. blue tooth to her phone and such she drove from auburn to Va Beach and dsaid it worked awesome so you could go that route it was like $50.
 
How concerned are you about audio quality? You can get a cheap FM modulator at 5 Below (like a dollar store plus $4 haha) with a 3.5mm headphone jack,you then tune your radio to whatever frequencies the modulator has. You won't get CD quality audio,but then again some mp3's sound horrible to begin with. You can probably find something on amazon or eBay for a few bucks more that also has a USB port for charging or memory stick.

So, this may be a bit of a derail, but if you decide to say "#$% it" and get an aftermarket unit, this is the one I'll be going with at the end of the month. It's $150 delivered, has bluetooth, USB and 3.5mm aux input.


The button and display colors are independently variable so you can set the appearance to match your stock configuration, or your led swap if you've done that.

I'll be finishing up my LED conversion and will be using the two color option (blue and light blue in my case) to pull the whole thing together visually.

Not super proud of it but believe it or not, it does sound OK, decent S/N ratio (meaning I don't hear any hiss) and it keeps my ipod charged up. It hooks up with either the earphone 3.5mm or via the ipods standard connection port then of course plugs into the cigarette lighter. Kinda looks like this for about $10 on ebay:

Seems like it is using the CD changer control port at the back of the stereo. Might work.

I'm not keen on losing my CD player but would likely live with it.

I'd say fairly concerned. I don;t want crappy sound, if that were the case I'd just listed to the music over the phone's speaker. I've had bad luck with FM Modulators in the past but that was over 10 years ago.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll have to keep it in mind. Not too expensive however any $ I can save here goes into coilovers and a new clutch for the GTO.

I just ordered the same stereo on Sunday. But it's the upgraded model with dual Bluetooth and sat radio capability.

My OEM radio is junk.
