$300 to swap from Dunlop to Xterrains?

Agreed to an out the door price of $28,146(includes TT&L) for a V-8 4WD 2005 SR5.
The stealership also agreed to change out the stock Dunlops for the last remaining Michelins Cross Terrains, free of charge.
3 hours later, just when I was ready to sign all the paperwork at the local credit union, I received a call. The stealership now says they have to recalibrate the pressure sensor (among other things) and now want an extra $300 to swap them. Needless to I'm p.o.. I talked to the manager and he says that I got $1000 off more than this Sunday's ad will be, and they have to charge me. What do all of you think about this?

recalibrate the pressure sensor???? If they were off another 4runner.. then it'll go right on the truck with no problems. Its not like its a different size and 300$ is a bit steep to mount/balance tires.

tell them.. "you told me it was for free... and now it's not? I didn't know that this dealership had bad communication between departments. Let me speak to the new car manager as well as the business manager."

Do you have the quote on paper? if so, then he's gotta suck up the 3 bills for it.

Chances are, they are just swapping the rims, which means that they won't have to remount and rebalance, but yet have to reprogram the tire pressure sensors, which i was told they had to take off the tire and remount it anyways since they have to get the ID code off the sensor to reprogram them from my local dealer. So, I don't see why they just don't swap the tires, and eat the cost. I'd rather eat the cost than lose the sale, but that's me..

Who cares why??? If that is what they offered you, than that is what you should get. I would ask them if they are really ready to lose this deal over $300 and the fact that you will not be back there again. I would also look up the "owner" of that location and send a letter if they don't budge. You would be suprised how pissed owners get about people hurting their reputation. Just my $.02.

They wouldn't deal, even though the tires and rims were already off. Rims were the same on both vehicles. Another place offered the exact same truck, even the same color, out the door for $28k even. This one has the Dueler nonRevo's.
Any opinion if the the Dueler's are better than the Dunlop's?

First off, if they made a verbal agreement to swap the tires for free, you need to talk (and put in writing) to the owner (go right to the top dog) and make him/her aware of the illegal tactics their employees are using to sell vehicles. By the way the Dueler HTs are better then the Dunlops, but the Michelins will last the longest. I would go for the HTs because you will want to get the REVOs on ASAP, anyway.

You always have to be willing to walk away.

Tell the first dealer "no deal", get ahold of the owner, and walk away knowing you have just as good of a deal somewhere else. You will learn the first dealer's reaction soon enough. Even tell him you have a better deal.

I walked, and then signed the papers for the one with the Duelers (cheaper too). Will pick it up tomorrow after re-doing the credit union check. My first new 4Runner, and driving it to Wyoming this weekend.
