In a sea of 285/70's there is very little information on fitting 305/65's on our 5th gens. After going this route on my 2014 trail, I wanted to start a thread to help others out who might want to consider this option.
Currently, I have a 3" Toytec boss lift. I actually got about 3 1/4 inches of lift from center of front hub to fender. I am running 305/65 BFG KO2's on Icon Rebound wheels. The wheel specs are 17 x 8.5, 4.75" backspacing, 0 mm offset.
I intentionally went with a low offset wheel because I was afraid I was going to run into some serious rubbing issues. Prior to installing the wheels I removed the front mudflaps and pulled the fender liner in front of the front wheels forward as far as possible. You can see I was able to relocate it just in front of the first stock bolt location. This was the same on both sides. I planned to get a body mount chop after install.
After installing the wheels and tires, I have been very surprised by the lack of rubbing I have had. I had a bit of rubbing on the driver side front bumper at full lock. I trimmed about an inch off of the plastic at an angle and fixed the issue. I have done some light/moderate offroading with no additional rubbing issues. I have not needed to do a body mount chop.
I suppose my point of this thread is that the 305's are not as scary as you may think. With a conservative wheel and a good lift, you are not going to see severe rubbing. I have also only seen about a 1mph drop in gas mileage around town and a couple mpg on trips.
I have some dirt king UCA to install and eventually plan on putting on some spacers. I will update with info on how that changes things. I expect the spacers to necessitate the bmc.
