30k mile service

Does anybody actually have the 15k and 30k mile services done by the dealer? I skipped the 15k because they weren't doing anything but "looking" at every part. But I was a sucker for the 30k because I didn't want anything to break on the way up to Mammoth from Orange County next week. They charged me $300!!! I'm a sucker :cursin:

I passed on 7500 "checkup"

I went in for a 7500 mile service and to get my JBL stereo replaced under warranty ( no sound issue). At first I said "yeah do the 7500 mile service. And the young service advisor behind the counter said," The full service?".

I said "umm, isn't it just an oil change?"

And he said "No, it's MUCH more than that"

So I asked how much more than an oil change and he replied $127 !!.... "Well what does it cover besides the scheduled oil change?"

He directed my attention to a sheet under the counter glass. Basically, they "inspect" stuff, like your CLUTCH ajustment, adjust your rear DRUM BRAKES, check your fuilds, rotate your tires, check for loose bolts on the chassis...... I haven't even gone off road yet ( waiting for dry weather).

Well, I didn't want to pay someone another $100 dollars for checking stuff, especially stuff my truck doesn't have. So I passed on it and just got my oil change and the stereo replaced. One hour estimate, but 2 hour service.. I should start a business "checking" peoples cars. Sounds like good money to be made.

When I was telling the dealer how it is much cheaper to do the service by yourself, they told me that you are running a risk of doing it on your own. It is better if you leave everything up to the dealer to do because they do it every day. Well, I am another sucker who is letting the dealer do all the service because I am afraid that something will get messed up. I looked at the 7,500 mile service up close and they do nothing but check. I have eyes and a wrench too!

Gee, my chassis suffers from loose bolts constantly....I better get right to the dealer

I wouldn't have bought a Toyota if I expected loose chassis bolts.
These guys kill me.

I thought the same as you. At 15,000 miles they don't do that much and most of it I could do myself. At 30,000 I think there is more do it. Also, I look at it this way, your warranty is about to run out at 36,000 miles. The dealer should look at it at least once before your warranty is up. (I know we have a 60,000 mile power train warranty, but there is a lot more stuff here than the power train.)

I know when they get the vehicle in Toyota recommends some things, but the dealer recommends a lot of extra stuff such as fuel injection cleaner, transmission flush & change and a host of other things. The tab can go from $250 to $450. Be sure to specify what you want done. I am not so sure I will do my 60,000 mile tune up at Toyota, but I haven't decided on that one yet.

So no I don't think your a sucker, there were a lot of things that needed to get done and your dealer has now seen your vehicle and if there was a big or little problem they would catch it.

thats just way too funny. if you look thru the rims on the 03+ runners, you can see the disc's.

Can you tell the dealer that you will just check that part and not have them look at it?

That should save you like $10.

One thing to think about is to be environmentally sensitive. At 30,000 you have to change the anti-freeze. Shops now have to re-cycle the anti-freeze. I have changed anti-freeze and captured the old anti-freeze and re-cycled it at my friends Auto shop. I must admit though I spilled about a 1/3 of the anti-freeze. And of course you need to re-cycle your oil.

Local Transfer Station

Here in Bristol, I get a sticker on the car which is good for access to the Transfer Station (town dump) for a year. Hook up the trailer and take any used oil (snowblower, lawnmower), newspapers, cardboard, glass, wood, furniture, metal, brush, leaves, grass, batteries and on and on, you name it.
It's free except for the sticker ($15/year). SO the extra expense of them reycling for me isn't worth it. If I made $75/hr I might reconsider. But until that day, I will do all I can myself. Also I don't have a great deal of trust in the dealer service. It's unfortunate but enough bad experiences with local shops and their shinanigans (hope I spelled that right).

Of course I do realize that many people have no where to work on their vehicle, or store tools (many apartments and condos). Then, good luck and fortune finding reliable and consciensious service centers.
